I personally would have preferred 2D, however there's a big difference between diverging from concept art and ending up with Mighty No 9.

Previous 2D Castlevania games (SotN especially) seem to be inspired by 14th century Gothic art. The current shaders and art direction we've seen to far should certainly be capable of reproducing that feel.

Background is really detailed, which is nice that they're actually putting effort into it, but something seems really off about it. I don't know if its the character blending in with the background too much, how assets are placed or if there's too much shit in the background. but something about it really hurts my eyes, I'd like to assume that this could be fixed by them just creating more contrast between things, but I can't tell for certain

Order of Ecclesia has obviously the smallest castle.

You only need 50. Later on you can use it several times if you need to, but in the early game you can use it to heal and/or clear the screen if you're about to die, it's pretty handy. Last time I played the game, I tried a hack that made the game harder (removed some weapons, inscreased enemy damage, made rods two-handed so you couldn't abuse the shield rod, stuff like that) and I still had to restrain myself because soul steal is OP as shit.

Am I the only one genuinely impressed with the work thus far? Miriam's model looks great, the environment looks great. It looks like concept work come to life. Like they just translated Order of Ecclesia into 3D perfectly. And they're not even finished tweaking the shaders and animation yet.
The movement is spot on Castlevania.

Everyone seems to be complimenting the idle animation, which in my opinion is the worse aspect. Because it's some cheesy anime pose only weeb would appreciate. But I can overlook that, because everything else is so nice. I'm actually starting to get ecited.

To be completely honest I am still not entirely sold on the whole idea of 3D 2D platformers or 2.5D or whatever you want to call it. I am not sure if it will ever really strike that well with me in comparison to good pure 2D games.

However, that said, I have to say that I am really liking what I am seeing here from the perspective of this still being 3D. As far as 3D is concerned I am really liking the looks of this and I was expecting a 2.5D Castlevania to look so much, much worse than this as in outright bad. Meanwhile I actually think I kind of like the look of this.
Sure it's no 2D, but it doesn't actually look bad. And I do appreciate how the background perspective pans with the camera thanks to it all being 3D, that is indeed a perk I can see over good old parallax scrolling using 2D assets. And even though it's not 2D I am liking the general style of the shaders. The lights and lighting looks quite atmospheric.

So yeah. It's not 2D. But as far as 3D concerned I have to say that I feel a bit blown away. It looks great and so much better than I had ever imagined it being. Makes me wonder if they can manage to improve it even further. I'd happily play a 3D game like this even though it isn't 2D, and it would be nice if other games that force the whole 3D thing could manage to implement a style that actually works with the 3D.

Honestly the areas need more contrast. The entire ship is a big mess of brown and black, and the level plane flooring is inconsistent with its lighting. There's a reason why the actual metroidvania Castlevanias have a lot of colors beyond the chaos that is the castle itself; it helps distinguish the environments better, as well as enemies and characters from them. Knowing what is foreground and background at first glancein a 2.5D game is crucial.
