Regarding the next Elder Scrolls comment, it doesn't work out that way. Todd and his team work in cycles, as far as I understand. They do an Elder Scrolls, then turn to work on the next Fallout and so on. They just shipped Fallout 4 last years, so they are probably in early stages of the next Elder Scrolls now. Don't expect it until 2019 or something.
It's just a cashgrab move that works easily. Not much to it. If only those fuckers used that money to get a new engine.

To be honest, Bethesda have already knowingly lied about how many people use mods (I don't remember what numbers they said, but the unique downloads of SkyUI on the Nexus, even if accounting for people downloading it multiple times with different IPs, was a clear demonstration that they were completely wrong).
Also, with the recent release of FO4 console modding they released the purposely misleading information that way more people were modding the game on console than PC, when they were obviously not counting the Nexus in their stats.
It seems all they do is to make PC look worse for some reason, so I might be wearing a partial tinfoil hat here, but I don't know how believable are their sale stats in this regard.

Second of all, it's the setting I think they like the most. Towns that feel like towns instead of just shitty 4-5 building hovels like in Skyrim-if you walk through Skingrad and then do the same for Whiterun you'll see what people mean.
Oblivion also had a good mix of races distrubuted through the world, while Skyrim is almost entirely human-looking dudes-which makes sense, but isn't as interesting.
tl;dr-Oblivion might not be the best or even better game, but it has a far superior setting, FAR superior quests and modding it to make it great provides a superior experience to modding skyrim to make it playable.

Previous remasters would have been too much work. Morrowind couldn't really pass as a 360 game alongside Oblivion, and Oblivion being a very early 360 game couldn't pass as an xbone game. But people will accept graphics like Fallout 4 this gen, so they'll probably take a higher res Skyrim too.

I'd imagine at this point they're terrified of losing it. It's shit, but it's the shit they know, and creating a new engine would probably have serious ramifications for modding which they've started to capitalize on even for consoles. I mean, the engine still has commented out code from Oblivion. If they can't even clean that up for fear of breaking something, the thought of a new engine probably wakes them up at night with panic attacks.

You might not know this but remasters are made with small teams. The next Elder Scrolls started development after Fallout 4, that team has nothing to do with the remaster.
The only reason I would ever EVER consider rebuying skirim is if they finally moved it to a 64bit engine.

Because Morrowind would need to be fully remade, so that's out of the question, and Oblivion was just a shitter, less popular version of Skyrim so there's no reason to remaster it over Skyrim.
Skyrim sold tens of millions of copies and is considered "THE" role playing game in the normal gaming universe. Bethesda sees that new consoles have been released, so they have a new market to re-release a massively popular game.
This is also a way for Bethesda to flex their muscles with their new Bethesda.net mod platform. Skyrim has tens of thousands of mods, now they can bring some of those to consoles just like they're doing with Fallout 4.

Fallout 4 has the more modern renderer with better stuff like sub-surface scattering for skin... the only problem is Fallout 4 just happened to have really washed out environments, strange human faces, broken buildings, dead foliage, and debris everywhere.

They worked on porting Skyrim to the Xbox One to test the waters for Fallout 4. This isn't aimed at the PC crowd since they already have Skyrim remastered and beyond. This is for the casual console gamer who would actually shell out for this since it will look better and they can't play their favourite game from last generation.
Skyrim was fucking massive. It would be kind of cool to see a Morrowind remaster but in some ways it would piss off a lot of people if they messed with certain mechanics. An Oblivion master would be brilliant since mechanically it is a fucking mess and it would really benefit from no potato faces. Skyrim makes the most sense, it has broader appeal and they've already worked on porting it as it is.
As soon as Todd mentioned that they worked on getting Skyrim running on next generation console to test the waters with the new consoles it was a cert that we would be getting a remaster. I've been saying this for months, it will be the highlight of their conference. It is too early for a follow up to Skyrim, this will bring in a fortune whilst people wait for the next game. They have nothing on the same calibre they could show or announce at this point and another conference doesn't make sense unless they're shoving out a new Fallout, Elder Scrolls or revealing one of their new in house "new ips".
Dishonored 2 isn't big enough, Wolfenstein isn't big enough, Prey isn't big enough, ESO isn't big enough. People would eat this remaster up.
