Capcom has been screwing Megaman fans for years. X3 actually had animated cutscenes and a full story that got cut from the game completely. Ever since then, Capcom has been removing story elements and using subpar translators to deliver a crappy product to its American and other english speaking countries.
They made it even more obvious that they hate the west with their "Megaman" honda skin for Street Fighter, which made fun of the fact that they changed Rockman to Megaman because, as a Capcom CEO said "Megaman just sounds like some fat and muscular wrestler who would want to fight rather than the character we created."

Just picked up Megamax X not too long ago, and have made it up to Sigma's lair p3. I really, really like this game for both the challenge and style. Great graphics, great music, and fantastic level designs.
I will say I'm a bitch and had to look up a good order to beat the levels in since many powerups make a boss a little or a lot easier, but aside from that I can certainly see why this game is revered as one of the all time classics. How does the original MegaMan series compare to the X series?

The original Mega Man series isn't quite as fast and is more focused on platforming, since you don't have things like the dash or wall climbing to make up for any missed jumps, but it's still a very good series of action platformers that excels in a lot of its own ways. It's easy to go back to the classic series since you're only used to X1 and not all the stuff piled onto the later X titles.
Classic Megaman lacks a lot of the added suit and energy add-ons, as well as wall-climbing and dashing. It's pure jump&shoot for the most part. It's also "younger" in that it doesn't have some of that more shounen teen edge X has.
I guess you can deem Classic series as more "pure". Some of the later Classic games (6~8) tack on stuff like super armor and secrets and gimmicks, but the batting average for the line is still pretty high. One of the worst would be Game Boy MM2 unless you really dip into the spin-offs/non-Capcom-produced titles.

Every X game has a good soundtrack and the cutscene art is pretty good, but having marathoned all the games in order, all I know was I felt a deep resentment for almost all gameplay design choices in X6.
