I believe in Japan, Hell is something of a synonym for "dark."
Doomknockers from Zelda II are called Hell Gumas there, with "Guma" possibly being Zelda nomenclature for some kind of hammer, because there's also an enemy called Guma, and in the EN version, an exclusive boss ALSO called Gooma. Finally, in Twilight Princess, there's an enemy called "Darkhammer" who looks like one of these Zelda II baddies.
