There's forshadowing in extra if you're paying attention. Also unlimited (the part with the Mechs) has the same MC taken from extra. Also the anime spin offs have nothing to do directly with what happens in unlimited and alternative. The relations the main character has with everyone aswell as his very selfish self centered personality take a large role in the story as a whole. Personaly extra is only 10 hours at most and it's worth reading for the rest of the story.
There is some mech action in extra as well which ties in with the rest of the series.

Muv Luv is fucking terrible.
It starts as a very typical bad harem high school hijinx but then after you play it enough times, the main character is swept into alternative dimension Earth where aliens are killing everyone super fast and powerfully since they are unbeatable and scary and so good. Then you just watch tons of characters die, including very graphic scene of your mentor character getting eaten by an alien, do that for 70 hours and its done with a dumb feel good ending with the main character returning back to the careless and nice harem hijinxs world.
Its entire premise revolves around the dimension hopping twist and getting "feels" for all the characters that are getting rapekilled that "you got to know so well!" during the harem hijinx chapters. Its fanbase is even more obnoxious than Fatefags. Fans of Muvluv seems to be under the impression that the more gory deaths you have, better story you have.
Also its fully in english already and for free so everyone buying it from steam is a fucking retard.

Ehh I never really paid attention to them so I might be wrong it wasn't all that amazing to me it had some entertaining parts and the Yokohama base defense and Marimo death was pretty good but the ending killed any desire I will ever have to read it again.

The battle descriptions themselves were very typical and had very little excitement in them. It mostly was "He runs really fast at the aliens and avoid them and kills them all.
