Actually, a debate is frequently about testing your own stance. At least that is what I use it for, even here on 4chan. I test my arguments, both how strong and convincing they are, and how comprehensible they are. My intention when entering a debate is more often than not to end up with different stance - or at least with different formulation and different arguments - than I had before I entered it.
You gain absolutely nothing if you exit a debate with the same stances and same arguments as you entered it. It's having to change your stances and arguments that is beneficial to you.
