They actually do have private games where you can use a host for something like a lan party. They don't like private servers because someone could easily use such a server to find out the IP addresses of all the players in the game. Blizzard doesn't like the idea of one of their ips being used to potentially exploit people.
It is a decision I can respect because their games are more public and 'mainstream'(not better, just more well known) than most other companies so you will have a larger market of non-technical users that push the "JOIN GAME" button because they think it magically connects them to a super safe and protected place.

Blizz had to rework the game they made to release it or they would suffer traumatic financial difficulties.
Starcraft was a subtle jab at Warhammer 40k, but they actually did it better than GW and this caused GW to steal a lot of the designs and ideas Blizz invented and used it for their lines.
The Tyranids used to just be genestealer cults with enslaved aliens, but SC comes out and suddenly they become Zerg.
