If theres One thing Overwatch did correctly above heroes is that ALL the characters are available to you from the get go and that the extras can be earned from simply playing the game normally.

She's the one character who literally can't do anything on attack aside from giving you a 25 point shield. Her basic attack is actually really good but you'll never hit anyone without your turret slowing them down because your attack range is so short. Mei's range is longer and she's the tankiest character in the game between the wall and ice block being able to instantly reset any damage you do and absorbe as much damage as Reinhart's shield while also being a physical barrier that prevents anyone from chasing her.
Also unless she's around to pounce on you her turrets are way too weak. You need all 6 of them to have any chance of killing someone who isn't looking for health at 15 hp and they have such little HP that any spray and pray attack is going to clear them out instantly. It would be neat if you could use them in a supportive way, for the slow to help out your teammates, but it's impossible for them to be anywhere near the action because any stray bullet destroys them instantly.

here's the gist of it
sometime in 2012 the reddit dota community appeared. these people were composed of, and are composed of still now, 2-3k mmr shitters, basically the worst type of dota player. a typical 3k shitter watches a lot of pro dota and thinks they know strategy, but in fact do not. they are also very bad at the game mechanically, but falsely claim to make up for it with "strategic knowledge"
i can't remember what international it was but one of them had really lopsided and short matches because pushing was really strong and team skillcaps were big. reddit started memeing and crying about their precious pro dota being efficient and short, and valve took notice and started making pushing harder and comebacking easier. then reddit cried even harder and valve added even more memeback mechanics. literally everything reddit asks for, valve adds to the game.
fast forward to 2016: memeback is at the maximum. early game kills or farming generally doesn't matter. you only need gold for your one core item that you need to kill an enemy hero, then you are good. if you can kill one hero on the enemy team, then you will always break even in teamfights. if you kill 1 hero and 3 of your heroes die, you will come out even because that one kill got you like 1000g those 3 deaths will give 300g each.
nothing matters until the last teamfight, really. pushing is so hard that no game gets ended before 40min anyway. and last patch they made pushing even harder so games typically last 60 minutes now, and the first 50 minutes of the match is just meaningless fluff. supporting is still boring, playing a carry is also boring, playing mid is annoying and offlaners compete of who can be less irrelevant.
but of course, reddit is ecstatic because the game isn't "toxic" anymore. you can fuck up all game but still win at 60min if your team happens to luck out and win an awkward teamfight.

if you get an early lead in hots, you can just end the game in 10-15min. if you get an early lead in dota, it doesn't matter. you can't go high ground unless you have a mega farmed carry who can siege, and even then it's incredibly risky. one failed high ground push destroys ANY lead the winning team has. consequently, no one wants to push high ground so the game devolves into farmville where neither team wants to make a move

One failed anything in HotS does allow the other team to come back regardless of your initial advantage. What you wrote sounds exactly like HotS plays except Blizz's game is much less complex on the build-up so it can be done with faster.

TI2 meta was good, but there were too many unviable heroes. Everyone will still complain.
TI4 meta was also good before Newbee discovered the pushing strats destroyed everyone. Even then, you could counter it if you had the right line up.
For what it's worth, IceFrog has always made the right decisions in changing the game since he first started. I've doubted him multiple times, but comparing how other games go about doing patches, he's just way better than most of them.

yeah but dota 2 used to be slow for a reason. small actions over a long period of time added up to some sort of advantage, like map control or gold or xp advantage. you'd amass these small advantages to a big advantage, then take crucial fights and push to victory. the enemy team could not defend the push off because they were too weak. they had made mistakes during the entire duration of the match, and as a consequence, they lost the game.

now any advantage you get is meaningless since they'll be nullified in a single teamfight or high ground defense. you can give your alchemist a 6-stack of ancients but it doesn't matter because the enemy slark will get half of that gold the next time he happens to be near alchemist when he dies. map control doesn't matter, gold doesn't matter, xp doesn't matter. it's just how you happen to use abilities in the next teamfight, or rather in pubs, who ragequits and throws first
