Von Karma wouldn't let you do anything, so Phoenix had to bring his bullshitting to new heights by putting on a goddamn circus act in the courtroom.
Larry storming in and giving a shitty testimony that actually blows Karma the fuck out so hard he starts screaming like an autist was a thing of beauty.
Calling the parrot to the stand, only to find out Von Karma's autism made him train the parrot not to speak, Yanni's story, Karma bringing out a taser on you, the incredible end game where you pull out Gumshoe's fucking metal detector to save the day, it was absolutely perfect.
So many people consider 2-4 to be the best, but that's only because of it's twist, 1-4 was nothing but amazing moments the whole ride.

For me replaying 1-4 makes me realize how lacking some of the court days were with how they spaced it out for three days.
That being said Von Karma great to defend against, and was a great "end boss" prosecutor.
He's definitely one of the most rewarding to put a chink in his armor, and I loved how he would constantly interrupt every one of your presses.

This is my biggest criticism about AAI2. They tried waaay too hard to get every case to link together and half of the things just seemed implausible and way too much of a coincidence.
Cases like 2-4 and 1-5 show that the writers are capable of writing an amazing case that is completely self-contained. I'm all for cases being connected but sometimes it's just too much

It works fine in AAI2 because all of it happened within approx a month and most of it was staged by various masterminds and so on
This approach doesn't work in mainline games and they need to stop doing it there. If they want another heavily story driven AA then they should just fucking make AAI3 already.

Last Spectre is fucking shit.
I replayed it the other day. Most of the puzzles are worded more weirdly than usual, which makes the puzzles tedious.The plot starts off interesting, I loved the creepy set-up with the whole blackmail plot with Descole and Clark, with Luke being reserved and all that mysteriousness in the air. Then it completely throws it down the pan with magical animals and Ariana/Tony who are absolute cunts.
Same with the police corruption and suicide parts. They start off as interesting (don't really expect them to show up in a Layton game) then they just throw it all out of the window. The Suicide is an accident and Jakes just ends up not being important at all in the end.
Last Specter is the that game in the Layton series that has huge wasted potential. It introduces a bunch of interesting plot points and then proceeds to royally fuck them over.
Definitely the worst Layton game. Azran Legacy would have to be a close second as it's also wasted potential too.
