I'd guess ashen ones are something like a last effort to keep the fire lit. The undead are people that got branded with the darksign and became undead, while the AO seem to be corpses raised for the sole purpose of being containers for souls. You have to WORK to turn into a DS 1 undead.

Ludeth linked the fire, though. You can't be a lord of cinder without first linking the flame at some point. He was just "weaker" than the other lords, that's why he's burnt to shit and all crippled.
For all we know he may be the last to kindle the flame. The others were brought back by the bell, but for all we know Ludeth is all charred because his fire just started to go out.

"Become a Lord to link the fire" does not mean that YOU link the fire. Same as being a firekeeper to link the fire. You have the lords (in their role as lord souls, part of the first flame) and the one to do the linking, sit there and burn on. The Lords become Lords by many means and then do their part once their time comes. Or they don't and fuck off because plot. But the fucker who sets himself on fire stays in the kiln and burns, as Gwyn did.
I like how the firekeeper in DS3 interacts with the games story and her involvement with ludleth
She is present in the opening cutscene, implied to be ringer of the bell that initiates the events of the game, and the various interactions you can utilise with the firekeepers soul, the firekeepers eyes and her small changes in personality, her involvement in her ending cutscene, how she describes a world without flame etc. It was all very nice little details
I feel some of the problem comes from From being very tight lipped on the exact nature of the keepers, there's a limit to just how much they can do her personality.

We need 5 LoC to link the flame (at least in this instance), The watchers, Aldrich, Yhorm, Prince lothric and Ludleth. We kill 4 and Ludleth willingly links the fire. Ludleth can't move, and none of the other LoC will do it, so we kill them and take their souls to the kiln. Since we have their souls we can sort of jury rig the linking, I guess?

The nightmare areas were a complete and utter disappointment, and the bosses following amelia were mediocre at best, shit at worst.
I prefer dark souls 3 because it starts good, and ends better rather than feeling as front loaded as bloodborne did.
You know what really, actually was the problem with Emerald Herald, and why you probably didn't feel comfy with her like the others?
She never looks at the player. She's always looking somewhere else which makes her come off as distant. That one detail breaks her entire character and makes you wish you could level at bonfires.

The doll doesn't do anything, and she's pretty much literally created to serve you, so, it makes sense that she's like that. She also has some plot significance when you realize that she was made in the image of Maria, and is possibly an old one herself.
Maiden in green has some plot significance and she actually does shit, I don't like her but she's at least got some personality of her own, and better still, you can actually kill her.

Irythill is when the game gets good, and then quickly goes back to crap. What? The second half was a mindfuck if you hadnt seen spoilers of it. Ebrietas, Rom, Logarius, Micolash, Mergo, Amygdala and the Chalice bosses were fun and great (not mentioning DLC). I love the bosses in DS3 but the areas are boring. Catacombs, Smouldering Lake and Izalith are one of the shittiest in the entire series without mentioning the bland light swamp and dark poison swamp. The only good parts of DS3 are the skyboxes and the graphics (minus the lightning) just as the Boreal Valley exemplify: nice intro and visuals but lackluster level design.

No matter how lackluster you found BB's potential to be, you can't possibly think DaS3 did a better job, since all it does is borrow from previous games. You already know the base plot, you already know almost all the major characters of the world, you have already used 80% of DaS3's weapons, armors, shileds, rings, and spells because they were from previous games.
There's barely anything new in DaS3. I also don't know how you can find Catacombs or their optional area good, they feel like some of the blandest types of challice dungeons. At least BB had an excuse to use 90 degree turn corridors in its randomly generated content. DaS3's catacombs and optional area however have no excuse. It's just lazy design- even DaS1's catacombs had more variety.

For example Demon's wasn't interconnected. Instead of making a Demon's 2 they made a new universe with DarkSouls and tried that new interconnected world thing. They wanted a vastly different theme and gameplay so they did Bloodborne. With DaS2 and 3 I really don't see what their aim was, at best they have a few gimmicks that add a bit to the core gameplay but not much.

DaS2 didn't quite know if it wanted to be a sequel or it's own thing, either way in my personal tastes it was too shitty to even care.
DaS3 pretty much repeats DaS1's ending and general message even if it does it slightly differently. On the whole it expands/concludes on DaS1's open threads rather than having its own story. Again, it DOES have its own story and plot threads, but relies too much on DaS1, which is the intention since it's a sequel, but that's precisely why I would have prefered 10x to have a new universe instead.
I wouldn't mind letting a lot of DaS1's questions remain open ended, just as a lot of Demon's and Bloodborne's will forever be.
I want FromSoft's time and money to be dedicated to new games or universes within a "Souls" core gameplay loop, not unnecessarily extending an existing one.
And like I said the water thing was a personal quirk of mine. Dark Souls 2 had far more inane and completely wasted references, whereas the references in dark souls 3 are built upon succesfully and integrated into the large subplots of the lothric lineage and the other lords of cinder.
If anything the primary concern in dark souls 3 is fixing the presumed accident in the past, as seen in untended graves, or not.
Sure there are similar implications to how dark souls 1 progresses and it's endings, but it is a continuation of the universe that succesfully expands and ventures into new territory.

Because I play Souls game for the gameplay itself, for that sweet first playthrough, the conjunction os level design, new discoveries, new enemies and the element of surprise - the story, pvp and (carefuly done) NPC questlines are more of an afterthought for me. When I say DaS3 recycles too much content I don't mean in story alone, but what affects me the most, which is gameplay and the element of surprise. DaS3 has more returning equipment than it has new equipment, which is ridiculous in my eyes. There is zero reason why the Estoc or Broadsword or the myriad of recycled equipment has to return. Why not make many new weapons with completely different unseen movesets?
Sure there is some obligatory item reclycling that must be done due to story, but they could have, for example, merged the story of 2 items into 1 and in place of that 2nd item they cut from a previous game they could add a new one.
In bloodborne when I get a fucking wheel as a weapon, or an ayy lmao parasite, or an "amygda-what?" arm, I haven't got a single clue how those weapons work, I don't know their moveset, I don't know shit, and it's so wonderful to get them and try them out. In DaS3 while i'm constantly being bombarded with items I already know what 80% of them do. When I got the Whip I knew to never touch it because it would be just as shit or situatioinal as 2011's whip, no surprise there.

The reasons why those weapons return in dark souls 3 is because it is an established series.
In a sense, it would be like making a new dmc game without dante's two pistols.
I feel that as a game, dark souls 3 did more than enough to include the weapons dark souls as a series has come to be known for, estoc, zweihander, falchoin, claymore etc. while introducing new equipment. Dragonslayer swordspear, gundyr's halberd, yhorm's machete, dragnslayer greataxe, gotthard twinswords, lothric's greatsword, lothric's sword, twin princes greatsword, I'll just say practically most of the boss weapons to shorten it.
Bloodborne needs new equipment because it is a new series, a new IP. It's not like the majority of the weapons in the game don't have equivalents in souls anyway. The real game changers came with the dlc, and even that was reaching in terms of not being in souls. I'm not really sure why you experienced such a "I've not a single clue how these weapons work reaction, especially with weapons like ludwig's holy blade, tonitrus, chikage, saw cleaver, hunters axe, saw spear, beast claw, blade of mercy, bloodletter, burial blade, church pick, kirkhammer.

Most of the weapon's in ds3 have copy pasted movesets from ds1. Even many of the animations go right back to ds1. This isn't a bad thing on paper, and it didn't bother me much in all the pre-release footage. In practice though, most of the game's movesets suck ass and are far less varied/versatile than DS2's.
Some weapon categories like Axes and Reapers had their movesets reworked, but they're complete trash for hitting other players. What bothers me most is how they copy pasted so many movesets, in the other categories, but dramatically changed the mobility of players and ease of avoiding attacks with the extremely generous i-frames on rolls.
The dramatic change to player mobility doesn't mix well at all with the weapons' movesets. Not only did they just copy paste a bunch of shit without considering the effects of player movement, but the movesets that ARE new are still mostly shit.
I don't know if it was actually intentional or not, but in DSII, you could consistently roll punish and hit people in general with almost any weapon category. Most of this came down to there being less i-frames on rolls overall, which is where I feel DSIII's largest shortcoming lies.

It's not that I expected them trash everything that made dark souls, dark souls. It's that I expected more coherence between the new player mobility and weapon movesets. These two facets feel as if they're from completely different games.
Dark Souls 2, regardless of how people feel about that game, copy pasted very little from Dark Souls 1 in terms of movesets. Sure, weapons roughly had similar movesets as they did in 1, but they were all re-animated and handled completely differently than they did in DS1.

More new content, progress, fixing issues, especially those that got fixed with BB such as not being able to snipe a boss from far away anymore, which was reverted back to DaS/DaS2's faulty ranged system.
As for the lack of BB weapons I prefer that method to bloating the game with old stuff.
In BB there are 2, arguably 3 whip-like waepons, all of them useful as your main. In DaS3 they returned the old whip moveset which resulted, yet again, in a mostly useless and ignored weapon class.
Same could be applied to daggers which are super useful and fun in BB but mostly gimmicky and hardmode in DaS3
They could've changed the combat more than they did. DaS3 was too safe of a sequel for me.
Why are weapon arts a thing? Why does that system have so many inconsistencies? Why does Farron's sword spin-a-roo attack not consume FP when it's even flashier than most weapon arts?
Why do all dual wield weapons have amazing L1 spam attacks which are a lot more useful than their weapon art and yet use no FP?
Why does the weapon one-hand/two-hand button not do anything? They vastly improved on it in BB by making that a combo attack between the two weapon movesets, why revert it back to doing nothing again?

But I dont deserve to get hit again by it while I am staggered. Or even worse, get hit by one attack and then get locked into some fucking 3 hit combo of bullshit.
I would make hyperarmor delay the stagger instead of ignoring it. You get hit, while doing oyur animation, you finish the animation and then you are in "exhausted" animation.

Unless perfect connection with minimal delay, the hyperarmor frames will kick up well before your hit actually registers in opponents world and since only opponents word matters in deciding stagger, its very unreliable.. Parries would be the same way if it didnt use two way confirmation.

well, the Kiln seems to teleport TO Firelink Shrine as the flame gets closer and closer to dying, if the end to DaS3 is a good predictor of things. So, by the time it dies fully, and the Age of Dark sets in, it should actually be pretty damn close. You just have to climb down the Firelink Shrine/ Untended Graves ash mountain, and climb the Kiln ash mountain.
We don't know how Ludleth was able to find the strength to link the flame, but he says that he got it through sheer willpower alone.

Basically one of the fights is filled with "illusion monsters" and yet they have long back and forth conversations.
