I would argue that the 4th one was maintaining status quo all the way up to monkey combat. What a fuck-awful way to ruin a game.

I hated the 4th one. Awful controls and art coming off the third one, but it had okay puzzles I guess.

Monkey Combat was fucking trash though for real.

I enjoyed the Tales games more than the 4th though probably.

The genre never died, and there are many decent adventure games getting released pretty much every month or two. It's just hilarious to see how ignorant those self-proclaimed adventure fans are. I see it on a lot of video game websites though, not just here, people claiming the genre is dead when it's basically the opposite of that.

I'm using AGS and even a simple adventure game is a chore to make, graphics especially. I love writing and drawing, but goddamn son I need to draw a shitload of stuff for an adventure game. I've been watching the Pirates of the Caribbean movies lately and I'm getting some serious Monkey Island vibes. I know it's based on that amusement park ride or whatever that Monkey Island games are also inspired by, but there's some really close similarities between the games and the movies. Hector Barbossa is obviously Ghost Pirate LeChuck ripoff, Will Turner is Guybrush Threepwood, Elizabeth is Elaine etc.

I tried playing the first episode but dropped it after a couple hours. there just weren't enough jokes, and they did the sin of having nearly every conversation having different options that, when clicked, had Guybrush say the exact same thing.

fuck TellTale for getting rid of their only good comedy writers after Sam & Max season 2

My main issue with the series that I never see anybody bring up is the main character's bizarrely out-of-place backstory. Why is there some world-famous master thief in a ghost story? Wouldn't the story be exactly the same if he were just a regular burglar? The entire idea of a world-famous thief is oxymoronic, why bring such an outlandish concept into the story if it doesn't have a point?

I would argue that it's not necessarily the episodic release that made it easy but

- the scope of every chapter being pretty small
- the actions being limited to "click on something to do anything"

if you have only a handful of places to go to and only a handful of objects, it's naturally pretty easy, but it gets even easier when you narrow down the options of what to do with these objects to clicking on something to do anything with it
back in the day adventure games had a fuck ton of options
pull, push, look at, eat, open, close etc.
monkey island 3 narrowed it down to 3 actions: hand, eye and mouth
now we're at a point where you just have to click on an item and he does whatever he can do with it
if he can pick it up, he'll pick it up, if he can push it, he'll push it etc.
that means just going from screen to screen and clicking everything you see, you get very far
an adventure game as to be complex, it has to be big, it has to have a lot of places to go to, a lot of items at any given time to use and a lot of commands to use on these objects and locations
I always thought the second chapter of monkey island 2 was perfect in that regard
3 islands to visits, tons of objects to interact with, so players really need to think what to use with what
you take an item from island 1 and use it on island 2 to get something that will help you advance on island 3 etc.

Even though that was a retcon and he hadn't even thought about the Tall Man then.

there are some things he refuses to do since they go against his 'gentleman's code' that I guess a regular thief would have had no compunction about. also its kinda neat seeing him go from a proud asshole in the first game to a beaten mess in Notes

The people in the first game quickly recognize him as a thief, which makes some people distrustful of him, so it's relevant there. Also, when he got arrested, he wouldn't have been allowed to join the Ghost Police or whatever if he were just a regular thief.

the greater the fall something something
>>
>>337336207
Wouldn't the fall from pride be more significant if he didn't have much legitimate claim to his pride in the first place? If he was just a normal criminal with an extremely inflated ego I think that robbing him of his pride would be more significant than it would be for a world-famous master thief who is suitably confident of his abilities.
>>
>>337334242
there were definitely parts in that movie that point to it originally being supposed to be monkey island

lechuck kidnapped elaine to marry her
barbossa kidnapped elisabeth
the guybrush character is probably split between will and jack, will being the young guy who wants to rescue his love and becomes a pirate, jack being the guy with the silly humour

there was the scene with the dog and the prison key, although that might originally have been taken from the disney ride, but there was also that scene where barbossa, I think it was, said that they named the monkey jack

there was a scene in monkey island 2 where guybrush finds out that elaine named her dog guybrush
>>

if the interviews are to be believed, Jack was written as a serious character, but when Johnny Depp did his audition as a drawling, unbalanced Loon they decided that played off Will's character much better.

Shu Takumi pushed the genre forward but no one, especially in the west, was talented enough to follow.

Traditional inventory puzzles were outdated back when Myst first showed up, but there are still good stale adventure games coming out, like Dropsy for instance.
