Party composition is more or less left up to you; there are way more classes than you really need. I pretty much never touch Berrserker or Samurai, just Dark Knight, alchemist, Black Mage, Gunner, Warrior and Songstress. Occasionally thief for steals. No PS2 game I've ever wanted to emulate has ever been unplayable because of it.
The only potentially game breaking issue was shadows not appearing in DQ8 since you need to chase a bigass bird shadow around at one point, but that's literally fixed by tweaking one setting that makes the game run a bit slower, but you only have to put up with that for the five minutes that part of the game takes.
