Your traits and government type have a massive effect on what you can and cant do, and the outcomes of slaves. So its a lot more complicated than that.

You dont fuck yourself unless you pick ethoses that dont actually do what you want. Once you get ingame and can see policies and what they do you can always re-roll your faction and pick the ethoses and traits that give you what you want.

One of them accidentally pissed them off way too early and instead of letting him get fucked for it, everyone decided to try and save him despite not having the forces for it. Also because the event was almost over at that point anyway.
