That's the game engine's fault. You do know Splinter Cell runs on Unreal Engine 2? PS2 plays games like Unreal Tournament '99 which is UE1, but UE2 is too much. Xbox can play games like Unreal Championship 2, which was UE2.5. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory was a very nice looking UE2 game and it played just fine on Xbox.

just admit it, if you didn't have a PS2 at the time, you just can't talk shit about the 6th gen. by far the best library of all time, i'm still discovering/playing some of its gems even today.
The Dreamcast (above) managed to have power that was still stronger than the consoles of the 6th generation (right) despite being released in the 5th generation of systems (below).
PS2 success is due to cheap DVD support, as well as carrying over from the PS1's success but fell hard when it came to multiplats.
Nintendo did their own shit again (mini DVD) and still had relative success with exclusives as well as some better multiplats (Panasonic Q supported full DVDs but same power for visuals but more for audio).
The Xbox success is attributed to the more mature audiences and ease of development as well as provided storage out of the box if devs sought to use it (or for music CDs) as well as Xbox Live (with memory cards for carrying your game profiles to friend's houses).
The Dreamcast not only had amazing exclusives, rivaled EA Sports, had portable memory units for save data, had internal storage, had full VGA support (in a time where that was brand new technology), had exclusive titles, had fantastic visuals and sound, had a wide range of games for even brand new genres, had accessories to fit what a player wanted, had arcade games IN YOUR HOME, had built in modems and a Broadband Adapter if you sought it for online play, had a proprietary disc format that was near the capacity of a mini dvd (soon to come), AND had 4 controller sockets for multiplayer games.
If you think the PS2, Gamecube or Xbox had any fucking original ideas or didn't take from the Dreamcast's success, then know that the controller, internal storage, special storage mediums, memory units, video output support, built in online support, and even its fucking games were carried over to the systems to the right in various ways. The Dreamcast was, in fact, The Ultimate Gaming System

Great console with arcade perfect ports. Great fighting game selection that also run great. Extremely creative and fresh games like Seaman, Jet Set, Chu Chu and more. The system is late 90s to me. And of course, fucking Shenmue.

Literally Dreamcast 2.0. Had sequels to many of DCs games, Jet Set Future, Panzer, CCrazy Taxi, Shenmue 2 dub, and more. System also had fantastic first party support by MS. Also was the only console to get tons of PC titles like kotor, fable and what have you. Had the BEST multi plat versions of all games, always looking better, running better, having better resolution options, and some games running custom soundtracks. The Xbox was literally twice as powerful as the PS2 and it shows. HIGHLY underrated console, it had more then just Halo, which is also amazing.

Nintendos most polarizing console. Most Nintendo fans were growing, and were upset at games not pandering to them, be it from change in gameplay, or not being gritty enough. Games like Windwaker, Sunshine are very divided by people. Otherwise stellar console, with some of Nintendos best IPs. Console had tons of hidden IPs of Nintedo that didn't get much love, like Battalion Wars, or Chibi Robo. Was a great party machine too, playing Melee, or if you could Crystal Chronicles was a fucking blast.

Arguably the best console ever released, and I'm inclined to probably agree. SO FUCKING MANY GAMES. Sony had games, third party exclusives, system was drowning in them. While the weakest console compared to GC and Xbox, some games looked unreal and it's amazing how they pushed the system with FFXII, MGS3, and GOWII. Not much more to say, fucking godly system.
PS2 > Xbox = GC > DC
Just my opinion. DC was my favorite back in the day, but nowadays having all of them it feels weaker since nearly all it's worthwhile games got ported, or sequeled.

It was THE shovelware system of its time, it had the most shovelware. This tends to be the case for platforms that sell the most. Wii was the same, PS1 was the same, it's always like this.
