When will this DS3 doesn't have an interconnected world meme going to end? The only part of the world that isnt physically connected to the rest is Lothric proper. You can walk from the undead settlement, to the profaned capital, to the cathedral of the deep, to anor londo, and back again as much as you want. Really the only place you gotta take a gargoyle ride is from Lothric down to the undead settlement and gee isnt there EXACTLY the same distinction in DS1 from sen's to Anor Londo? Hell in DS3 you can even do things way outta order like killing Oceiors and Dragonslayer Armour before you even go down to the undead settlement. You can off Wolnir before you ever step foot in the cathedral of the deep. You can kill Aldrich before you step foot in the jail. You can't do shit like that in DS1 without the fucking master key as a choice.
The sequence breaking potential in DS3 is vastly superior to DS1 from the very first playthrough. I'm convinced anyone who tries to honestly say DS1 is more interconnected than DS3 has never played the latter.

All signs point to the first firelink being the "fake" one. You cant physically travel there from anywhere. You have to teleport too/from it where as you can physically walk to the "dark" one. Ludleth also talks of the "dark" firelink after you visit it. He knows of its existence and location. So it's possible there was an age of dark prior and Ludleth was the one who linked the fire and "cured" the dark firelink. Which mplies the dark firelink is actually the past.

That's the thing its decidedly unclear. If you look towards Lothric Castle at the "normal" firelink everything looks fine right? Lots of light everywhere. But when we travel through the Lothric castle that we traverse through, where everything is nice and shiny and bright mind you, we exit literally into the abyss and upon looking back the world is absent of light. Not only that but the handmaiden in that shrine actually says no bells have rung and is genuinely surprised to see an ashen one arisen. Clearly, the two firelinks are either in physically different places or the same firelink at two different times. I lean toward the latter. I think that particular dark age preceeded Ludleth and he made himself Lord of Cinder specifically to "cure" it. Of course that doesn't answer the question of how we travel to the "past" by going through an illusory wall.
