I really hope that it will have 90s or early-2000s era graphics. Not because of the nostalgia factor, but because it's more likely that he will be able to design maps on his own and in a much greater variety if the visuals don't require as much detail and polish as modern games'.
He said that his E1M8b map was a warm up for this project, I hope this game's maps will be like that. I'd prefer 3D maps with more verticality though. Really, just give me a game like Quake but with a different theme and more unique weapons and I'll be happy.

There's a GZDoom mod called LegenDoom which is sorta Iike it, though more akin to FO4. Random enemies are picked to get legendary status, revealed after taking some damage, and they drop weapons with special traits.
DoomRL Arsenal is a gameplay mod with weapon modifications as a major part of it, and is also worth a try.

Well, what really seemed to be ambitious in Daikatana is the sheer amount of variety in assets because it covers four very different time periods. Maybe he just didn't have a grasp on the time and effort necessary for artists to do their job. He also mentioned that there was a lot of conflict going on and people walking out of the project. Not having a good grasp on the time frame for a project seems more like lack of experience in project management than programming.
