Nigger they're all gimmick characters except for a couple. Most of the characters are based around a specific quirk or archetype, very few are actually fleshed out much less have depth.
Gundham was great because he didn't devolve into an Ace Attorney-tier villain like a lot of the killers do. He stayed true to himself until the end, believed completely in his motives, was willing to 'battle' with Nidai so that one of them would potentially become a martyr, and faced his death laughing like a goddamn badass.
He was one of the few characters that, despite committing straight up unabashed murder, actually felt kind of heroic to me.

The nonstop argument right before Hajime goes full fuck this is my favourite moment in the game.
It's just really well done, you totally feel the despair of the everyone. The old cast as they suddenly start to realize their plan might just fail right here and the new one because both of the choices offered to them are awful. And they argue with each other and both sides have valid points, it's just truly hopeless.
As much as I love DR1, in the final confrontation Junko didn't actually offer much, there wasn't much temptation. They just had to not lose hope.
In DR2, there's a genuine struggle because her option seems appealing.
