Invaded a gank squad once with the host and both phantoms using this and still easily killed 2 of the phantoms while they were busy trying to get a running start to use that stupid fucking move. I'm running a DEX build and the Crystal Rapier is the only weapon besides my bow that I can even rely on in PVP.

2v1 is pretty doable should you avoid making retarded decisions like the watchdog in OP and navigate to a large area. I never feel quite outmatched unless both players are well synced. One (or both) will be shitty players, usually the host since he needs a summon.
3v1 and up is where you get fucked hard or get a lucky break. Fuck that.

It depends what stage you're invading in. In early stages, hosts with phantoms are prioritized to stop you from shitting on new players and wasting their embers. In later stages, everyone has equal priority and you get more 1v1s

You are an R1 spammer if:

I made a sorcery/pyromancy/miracle only character as my second one, and even though it's my second time through the game, it's much harder. Some things are going to very easy, just backpedalling and shooting spells, but for a lot of stuff you do more damage and recover more quickly just by swinging a weapon. So far it seems worse in every way, but I haven't hit late-game stuff yet. Early magic PvP is ridiculous, you're rarely going to be the thing that kills the player since anyone who has played for an hour can dodge fireballs and soul arrows all day.
Not being able to lock onto people playing dead is a huge annoyance.

Realistically, if you're good, you can make them work. I use Winged Knight Twin Axes because I fucking love axes. I'm also already really good at PvP so I beat phantom ass and host ass alike with them. However: neither of them are as good as Gottard's Twin Swords. They're just outclassed by moveset and range. Gottard's have some insane combos you can just make up as you go, something neither the Maracas or Axes can do.
Gun to my head and I could only pick between the two, I'd go Maracas. Better moveset than the Axes.

Just tested it. Clutch rings boost the elemental damage on elemental buffs, like carthus flame arc. It also boosts the inherent elemental damage of the weapon, or anything they get from say fire or chaos infusions. I beat sigma 1 and 2 on MN. From an action game's perspective dark souls is basically really shallow NG, but unlike ninja gaiden there's a lot more you can play around with build wise and it makes for a good dungeon crawl. Just don't expect the combat to be deeper than a puddle and the moment to moment mob fighting is shit tier compared to action games.
The highlight is really the bosses.

I started sorcerer then rushed to 50 INT. Then started leveling Vigor because that was the time bosses would start to 1-shot me. Currently got:
25 Vigor
40 Attunement
60 Intelligence
I also gave myself enough STR to wield a Rapier and Estoc for trash mobs.
For spells, you'll want (Great) Heavy Soul Arrow, (Crystal) Soul Spear, (Crystal) Homing Soulmasses, and Soul Stream. Soul Greatsword can be fun in certain places, like the Deacon boss.
