It's a mix of both, I guess. The falme calls the Lords to see if anyone's up to doing it and if they don't we get summoned to escort them back and then when their corpses are on the throne, the keeper asks for us to be acknowledged as worthy to link the flame and effectively do what they should've done.
Ludleth was especially lazy, the cripple could've gotten himself some new legs.

It was a cool looking and fun fight with really nice music. Thematically it was perfectly on point, couldnt really ask for more. Probably my favorite in the game definitely earns its spot as potentially one of the last bosses you face before ending it.

I think crestfallen had it right when describing Aldritch. The potential to link the flame is what qualifies a lord of Cinder along with their other lifetime merits. The watchers, as a whole, probably had the potential since they fought off the abyss for so long even if their soul points more towards what gave them abyss fighting powers being the thing.

Same here. What irks me is, if you have just as much as activated the dungeon bonfire, that's it, no kitchen siegward. It's like you get penalized for exploring. I'm fine with certain steps cutting the lines, but this is just too much. Like, if you fought Yhorm before finding sieg in dungeon, that makes sense.
In das1 you could reasonably go back to older areas to pick up npcs you missed.
So why do some random shits like the first boss and those two hollows on the high wall grow like giant rat things out of their bodies

I have a feeling it's more that than actually using them unless it's to power up the unknindled's body to actual be flame fodder.
Also oddly enough, we don't actually use their souls getting to the kiln or at the flame, we use their bodies/cinder. Their physical part while we just use the soul to get stronger in some manner so it might be like Das1 for the souls.
