After seeing things like So Sorry and that Godzilla clone failed Kickstarter, with the fetish monsters tossed in, I feel like if I were a dev with some kind of "make a character" incentive it'd have a really strict disclaimer. Like, no fetish shit, no characters that break the rules of the setting (eg if the game has only humans, no furry characters), no OC Donut of Steels that were made prior to the person funding enough for the make-a-character incentive, stuff like that. Like, I would try to make it crystal clear that fetish characters and furry shit wouldn't be allowed before they tried to throw their money at me and cry when I refuse their shit character. Glad I'm not a dev having to deal with that, though.

I think make-a-character incentives are a good way to get people involved and to make an interesting character from an out-side source. Like Muffet, she was an amazing case of make-a-character gone right, but So Sorry is the exact opposite of make-a-character gone wrong. Limits should be stated for what directions the character is allowed to go in terms of design, I'm not saying lock the backer down where they have no control but let them know that they can't just shoe-horn a fetish OC or cringe-worthy furry into the game.

The Nikki ghost is in much worse taste than the slime girl. Slimes are a generic enemy monster and Shantae has plenty of monster girls, it's an unobtrusive concept that fits perfectly.
Ikki on the other hand is a bad joke about an existing character. Nikki herself isn't even dead, she used in TONS of promotional material in Japan and even has her own travel quiz games. Plus they made her into a mimic, which has nothing to do with the character they're parodying.

What he's talking about is the producers for GoT had the books to follow. After season 1 the show was caught up and Martin wasn't working with the producers closely. He'd give them the Cliff's Notes version and tell them to fill in the blanks.
