Its been beaten by other more popular video game genres.

Pretty much. Still a few series but its pretty niche now. Its evolved onto a 3D plane though too. Yakuza is probably the most popular current best em up.

Senran Kagura on 3DS is beat em up, the others are more musou like.

I'm playing a pretty fun game that came out on 3DS in Japan last year Kenka Bachou 6. And there's a really interesting new 3D beat em up coming for Vita called "Uppers" which looks really good.

played a while ago (few months).

Streets were packed still for trading, got into matches no problem. Unless something drastic happened i can't see it being dead in any capacity
