You can't fully control them, yes, but there's still this gambit system in which you assign a "mode" to your party members whether you want it to be defensive, offensive, or support. There's also a 'kind of' ATB system in place wherein you can use your party member's special moves as shown in the Nifleheim Base footage.

You don't even need to move the character because he just runs up automatically, and there's no strategy to the bosses aside from running behind them THEN mashing X. Having to equip skills to manage your combo length to counter boss revenge mechanics, abuse i-frames, and abuse weaknesses while still having to dodge some of the most intricate boss fights in an action RPG sets it above the bar for me

Having a final fantasy game with a fully 1:1 world map is pretty awesome and something I could have only dreamed of happening while playing the ps1 era games. Hopefully the narrative keeps you pushing in certain direction and the world is interesting to explore.
The combat in the platinum demo was pretty fun. Its not the final fantasys of old but there's plenty of other games to play if you want straight up turnbased. Time for something new. The stealth gameplay they showed for that one night time base raid looked really fun.
