I fucking hated Drakengard 3, it felt like it missed the point that made 1 and Nier more interesting. In those games, your character committed some awful shit, but they were as clueless as the player on what was going to happen with the plot as the continued.
In 3, Zero knows exactly what she's doing, you know exactly what she's doing, she ultimately does it with no real changes to the plan, but the player arbitrarily has the context hidden from them even though she knows. Makes the whole thing really static and boring compared to the character's actions leading to an unforeseen result and revelation.

Watchers are called angels in the jap version and are synonymous with what the intoners summon (it's worth noting that Zero also calls them daemons).
Basically there is nothing concrete on what they actually ARE--best guess points to extra dimensional beings or ayyyys (the "aliens" Emil fights are probably watchers) who can be summoned to our realm through magic/song.

Branch D after Mikhail went DDR on the Flower.

Not even the DLC can salvage the writing when the backstories of the intoners are literally nothing except for one,two and four's.

I think the change in context is the point of the story, multiple viewpoints on the same occurrence. The game starts off with Zero as a psychopath that wants her sisters' power and will kill anybody who stands in her way and by branch E you're going through brainwashed masses to impede an evil flower from destroying the world. Zero knows far more than the player and the gradual reveal of her intentions and motivations make it so the story can play with her character.
If there is one major flaw with the storytelling is that it never explores Mikhail and how he would grow in the universe the game takes place in. He was probably the only innocent creature in the entire game and I wondered if they would ever show him breaking or just giving up his simple ways to become a senseless killer like Zero. But even by branch E he's hardly changed other than being slightly more capable by himself and having earned a slight amount of Zero's respect.
Regardless the game has a very different tone than 1 so I can understand your not liking it.

Read TDI's LPs, he covers all of the extra materials in each entry. All of the pain of the story, none of the pain of the gameplay (which honestly isn't THAT bad).

Honestly I don't think gameplay in the first two games is that bad, there's a shitload of weapons with a lot of variety and magic but getting the weapons and leveling, and after that finding what's good among them is the hard part.
Air combat is fun, but can also be helluva challenging depending on the verse.
Some ground enemies in melee combat will make you tear out your hair, the ones with shitload of HP, 4-5 hit combos that can two shot you and don't allow you to use magic on them, this is the toughest aspect of the gameplay.
That for the first game.
2nd is much easier, but you have to replay everything all over again to get each ending.
3 is easy once you get the hang charging and stamina control.

D1 is the only one that is physically painful to play and I haven't played D2 so I don't actually know how bad it is. D3 is a mediocre action game with a bad frame rate but the gameplay is generally tolerable if you play in 2-3 hours bursts.
Nier is in the same boat but without the bad frame rate and instead piss easy combat, unless you play on hard then it just becomes a chore to kill anything.
PS3's are pretty cheap and I'd recommend playing all of them yourself for the best experience if you think you can stomach mediocre gameplay but if you can't afford a PS3 then youtube's always an option.
Also it's probably better to start with Nier or D3 since those play a bit better and D1 can easily turn you off the series.
