West and Axe have a long way to go when it comes to mentality and general decision-making; when you look at how quickly the top 5 in particular think and react with smart options that's really the main thing holding back West- obviously Axe is somewhat limited by his character in a lot of scenarios. Plup is the closest to that spot, his neutral and punish games are fantastic and he's much more consistent than the others even after today's showing, which is a clear difference from his normal form. PewPewU is probably next after Axe/West on that list, but he has the same problems they do compounded by his character's slightly less solid matchups. Wizzy has the best eye for punish that I've seen in a long time and his movement is amazing, but his overreliance on his flowchart combined with him being Falcon means higher-level matches means he can be torn apart by people like Armada, Hbox and Mango. He reminds me of old school m2k more focused on optimizing tools before working on the mental and interactive aspects of the game. Colbol is just really inconsistent.

Low to mid level Melee isn't as interesting to watch, and Smash 4 is an easier game to get into, especially when people want to play their favorite character rather than the best. Only in the sense that the game actually discourages you from playing smart in a lot of ways. Base level setplay spam gets you way farther than trying to work off of reads in Smash 4. Then it's just learning how to fade everything safely and learn to be patient for the entire match. Look at how campy Abandango plays and manages to do well with even considered bad characters.
Smash 4 is really difficult to be consistent with just because it requires so much more work overcoming the game trying to stifle you getting reads working properly since the game has so many "get out of jail free cards" and setplay spam is so strong that you're going to lose a bunch before winning anything and the payout is ass. Zero dominates because he actually grinds out the pyramid of being good at Brawl/Smash 4: camp, optimal setplay, reads. He isn't even THAT good at getting hard reads, but he does the other two so well that other players have no way to really adapt.

He's a great player though and Puff is fun to watch sometimes but I think he comes off a little less personable and a little less deserving just because his play is really based on gimmicks. But the sleep gimmick overshadows his great tech skill and amazing gimp skills. He can really shit on people with his combo game and his reads are fantastic but I don't think he deserves the technical praise you would give to Armada or PPMD. I really think all of the "gods" are shitty people, at least on a surface level. My favorite is PPMD and even I can tell he's a horrid mouth breather who is just a little too invested in competitive video games. The reality is we worship people who are unnaturally good at something that has no bearing or consequence.

Fox matchup is piss easy when he's not in neutral. You don't even need to understand specifics, just that you can basically combo the fuck out of him.
The hard part is baiting and predicting your opponent to punish. Even then, a lot of foxes *can* become predictable.

If Melee skill were to be divided into two categories, tech skill and game sense, Mango would definitely be number one in the latter. The guy just knows Melee. He knows what people will do in a lot of situations and how to counter them. It's not exactly mental strength, but the ability to get into the opponent's head and make them make mistakes.

So, so true. He's got great talent for tech as well, but he really just has the deepest sense for the mental side of the game and how to make different people crack/get frustrated/do what he wants. Besides that, he plays so many characters so well that his baseline familiarity with all the characters rivals that of m2k (though as we all saw, his Puff leaves quite a bit to be desired nowadays). I really do hope PP feels better soon too, he's another guy who I feel has a fantastic knowledge of the game beyond the mechanical punish stuff.

PM tournaments still do happen! They're just unlikely to grow because they can only be streamed on hitbox and similar sites (Twitch doesn't allow it), and like it or not money definitely affects local scenes and shit like that. Shit, good players MM and form rivalries over money and great players generate interest and thus entry fees, as well as fostering regionwide improvement. The fact of the matter is that Melee just has more of everything. A lot of people don't give a fuck and do play the game they like the best, but the size of the Melee scene definitely factors in for a lot of people.

I played Melee when I was younger, and Smash 64, and a tiny bit of brawl, and I have Sm4sh now but hate the neutral-ness and defensive style of it.

Dude play what you want, I'm just saying Melee's bigger! If you don't have grand tournament aspirations and shit like that PM is fucking awesome, I personally have more fun playing it than Melee just due to the fact that you can play so many characters and be truly viable. The biggest difference is the physics delay in PM, stuff generally happens 1 frame later physics-wise while still having the same responsiveness, so dashing/wavedashing/L-canceling feels pretty different and stuff like Falcon's dash speed/range is slightly different, aerial side-B is death, etc. Your neutral instincts don't really depreciate between the two games besides getting into really granular shit like "does X move beat Y move in Z situation" and frame data, but even still a lot of moves in PM are copied 1:1 (though I think this is less than it used to be now). Honestly a lot of the questions you ask can be answered with the question of what region you live in; if there's no PM scene you're kinda boned when it comes to being able to reliably get better beyond your group of friends.
