That's a fine standpoint in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with a character being gay, or hell, even transexual. It's just a character after all. What's important is how it's brought up, if it needs to be brought up at all. If there's no romance or anything in a story, we have no need to know whether a character is gay or not.
How it's presented is also important. A big error a lot of "Progressive" devs keeps making is making it so blatant and in your face that it becomes a caricature, its sexuality its major defining trait and that is just bad writing.

think of it kinda like this, blizzard sells blockbuster books like game of thrones that are huge and expensive. they write a book, sell it, and then move on to the next book. Valve sells a small story on some site like chyoa where they periodically add a new chapter and allow the community to write their own chapters.
