I feel like my hopes were not that unreasonable, but all this game did was absolutely crush them at every turn.
The entirety of this game's development cycle was quite painful for me, and taught me to not have any hopes, even if they're realistic.

You also have to consider it was never a Dark Pit vs. Medusa kind of deal. The thing is, unlike Medusa, Dark Pit and as well as Doctor Mario and Lucina were all intentionally alternate costumes in the same way Alph, the Koopalings, and to a lesser extent Wireframe Little Mac are right now. Due to various circumstances, the dev team took these costumes and made them their own character slots.
Alph was actually planned to get the same treatment but it never feel through (http://sourcegaming.info/2015/07/29/plucky-little-guys-olimar-and-alph-in-smash-4/). I guess it was because Olimar is generally a much harder character to work with and they basically barely got him to work on 3DS anyway.
