Remedy has a history of having a pretty fun game, but not a lot of progression or change throughout the game. What IGN says in this review as cons is exactly what I associate as problems with Remedy's earlier games. The mechanics existing at the start are pretty much the exact same mechanics you have at the end. The games never grow or change beyond a single set of mechanics. It doesn't even try to mix it up with levels which are a little different. Alan Wake had this problem with just removing shields with the flashlight and shooting. Max Payne had this problem with no changes to shootdodge. The only thing which ever changed was the weapons you had available and a lot of them were fairly similar.
I can't believe they haven't learned their lesson after 15 fucking years.

My guess is that this isn't really the game that Remedy wanted to make, but the game MS wanted them to make AKA something they thought would appeal to the mainstream audience. Something about this gave just looks very... Un Remedy like. My guess is MS is allowing them to make the next Alan Wake game in trade for this game.
I also think the tv aspect of the game developed from how Alan Wake was structured. If I remember correctly, I think Sam Lake said that MS really liked the TV structure.
