Wow, I was spot on.

Both can be done very shitty. But when done well Cyberpunk still outdoes Steampunk.

Steampunk is only good if they don't went overboard with it. The Order 1886, how shitty it might be, pulled off the atmosphere very well. Same thing with Dishonored.
>>
Neither. Give me something more unique please.

>>
>>332699279
Dishonored gets a pass because it's not actually steampunk

It also fits the -punk prerequisites pretty well by having advanced technology for the apparent era with a strong divide between privileged elite and downtrodden unwashed masses, unlike most shit that calls itself steampunk
>>

>>
>>332699434
I'm pretty sure The Order is closer to Dieselpunk than it is to Steampunk. Dieselpunk actually has the potential to be great, while Steampunk is just kind of mediocre.
>>
Cyberpunk is a genre and is known for high-quality media such as Bladerunner, Deus Ex, Ghost in the Shell, etc.
Steampunk is an aesthetic, and is associated with cosplay and alternative art. Nothing of real value has come out of it.

How is this a debate?
>>
>>332697965
Cyberpunk. I honestly prefer it for reasons that image really nails. Cyberpunk generally is more colorful and flavorful than the dull browns and yellows that Steampunk favors.

>>
Cyberpunk is a movement that predicted the world of today and tomorrow, megacorporation being more powerful than small nation, the war on drugs failing miserably, the alienation of people that have access to good technology while food is way too expensive.
The PUNK term in Cyberpunk is well deserved, since the "no future" attitude is often well represented by main characters fighting against police, corrupted government and similar stuff.

The PUNK part of steampunk is there, i shit you not, because people that made up the term thought it sounded "cool".
It's mainly about nonsensical rich neckbeards traveling the world at the expense of slaves.whohoo

Also notable among the earlier hypermedia and virtual reality systems was the Aspen Movie Map, which was created at MIT in 1977. The program was a crude virtual simulation of Aspen, Colorado in which users could wander the streets in one of three modes: summer, winter, and polygons. The first two were based on photographs—the researchers actually photographed every possible movement through the city's street grid in both seasons—and the third was a basic 3-D model of the city.

Atari founded a research lab for virtual reality in 1982, but the lab was closed after two years due to Atari Shock (North America video game crash of 1983). However, its hired employees, such as Tom Zimmerman, Scott Fisher, Jaron Lanier and Brenda Laurel, kept their research and development on VR-related technologies.

Cyberpunk because it actually tends to be "punk" in the sense of being anti establishment in its themes and stories.

Steampunk is a stupid term that adopted "punk" as a suffix as if it just meant "style" while rarely being actually rebellious. In fact, often glorifying an upper class Victorian aesthetic.

The problem with Steampunk is that no one fucking has any interest in world history.

It's all just:
>Top hats! Gears! Steam guages! Monocles! Now Frankenstein it all together and slather it all over EVERYTHING!
Which really has nowhere to go, no cohesion, no narrative comes to mind.

The appeal of steampunk, that people don't realize, already exists if you just fucking know anything about the fucking real-ass Victorian era in England and America. Big moustaches and sideburns, top hats and bowlers, monocles and spyglasses, revolvers and swords, steam power, coal power, clockwork mechanics, the industrial revolution, the plague, gentlemen and Cowboys, occultism, Lovecraft, Crowley, it's all right fucking there in a history book. Its one of those periods of history that lends itself well to video games and narratives in general. But instead we get shit like Damnation and Darkwatch.

The concept of "steampunk" needs to just fucking die already. It's just a bastardization of the real Victorian era, which is way more interesting and should just replace "steampunk" while a game is still on the drawing board.
>>
>>332712527

I like them both, but I prefer steampunk with magic and fantasy elements. A pure steampunk set in a mundane setting is boring and dumb. Do some of the studio Ghibli films count as steampunk? It has a lot of the anti-industrial themes, not to mention Hayao Miyazaki and his gigantic boner for airships.

Aside from aesthetics, what's the difference between Cyberpunk and present day?

No resistance.

Ah, so you're actually a robosexual. You have my sympathies then, unlike those degenerates who just want a Realdoll that can hug them back.

My view is that while we can still barely make a bipedal robot that can walk under its own weight (let alone have intelligent conversation and possess sexual gratification devices), tactile stimulation is the only thing missing from VR waifus. All we need to do is crack the tech barrier that is preventing us from figuring out how to manipulate neural signals from muscle memory to enable us to feel the sensations we expect, when we expect to feel them, or to input/modify signals to straight up make us feel those sensations when the simulation commands it. And with all this neuroses cap "psychic game" tech we've been fucking around with, it honestly seems like we're almost there. Or perhaps some kind of full-body suit that has little electronically-inflatable pods where most of our nerve endings are, and variable-tension cords along the fingers, arms, and legs to restrict movement so it actually feels like you're holding something and not moving your arms through it.

Literally full hipster mode. Like seriously, at least Cyber punk fills your Sci-fi needs. Steam punk is just random clockwork and steam machines just "because"

Ironically enough though, they prefer steampunk, because while it doesn't mesh with their IRL image at all, it primarily features British men, whereas cyberpunk is all-American.

You can't be "like a sir" that hurt to type when you're busy running through a virtual environment simulating a hypercorp's security systems, trying to hack into their mainframe to cyber-sabotage them, all while physically hooked up by wires and cords to a ramshackle VR-PC in some rebellion-owned Chinese restaurant basement.

How's steampunk punk anyway?
>>
>>332697965
Cyberpunk by far and away.

The aesthetic of steampunk is cool and all, but there has never actually been a good steampunk work ever and it opened up the door for so many fake nerd girls to throw on some 'sexy', revealing steampunk outfits and call themselves 'nerds'.

Cyberpunk in its original form may be outdated, but at least it has some relevance still.

>>332716968

>>
>>332717265
>>332717294
Okay, yes, but cyberpunk only ever seems to be first-world Asian cities or North American cities, with naturally multicultural low-life populations, whereas Steampunk exemplifies high-life British people, mostly white but often with ham-handed multiculturalism to coddle modern Tumblr audiences.

Do you fuckers remember Treasure Planet? The Movie? Is that Steampunk?
>>
>>332717351
It's not. Some asshole saw how cyberpunk was "like our society but with high tech prevalent even among lowlifes" and noticed the Victorian aesthetic trending as "like our society but with low tech prevalent even among the elite" and said "they're basically the same thing! I'll call this other one 'steampunk' because of steam instead of cyber! I'm so clever!" And then, unfortunately, it caught on for so long that people stopped questioning it.

Dieselpunk is so underrated.
>>
>>332697965
Steampunk is only good nowadays when mixed with fantasy magic shit.

Cyberpunk is tricky to pull off but it has one hell of a payoff.
>>
>>332714025
No, as matter of fact a lot of miyazaki movies are post industrial but pre -electronic age, fits right into diesel punk.

Cyberpunk. More aesthetically pleasing and I feel it's much more open in terms of potential ideas.

I really like how Transistor went about it too. That whole older broadway mixed with new tech.
>>
>>332698143

What's the criteria for this? How it works with the Cyberpunk theme or how enjoyable the game, which happens to have a Cyberpunk tone, actually is? If the latter, what the hell is Frozen Synapse doing so low?

VR is the wrong term here, mindjacking is more suitable.

The difference: VR is typically just visual & audio, mindjacking is basically all your senses being put in a VR simulation, so you can see, hear, feel, smell & taste.
