Geese is not just some normal dude in KOF. Every appearance he's ever made has been special. His last canon appearance was on the boss team, which you fought before Chizuru/Goenitz. Even his non canon appearances like 2k2 UM and Neowave make him a boss character in some capacity. He's not THE boss, but he is still a major antagonist and his return is pretty big in my opinion.

I like the idea of Geese having felt so bad about fleeing Ryo in the AoF2 ending that he made a point to buckle up and challenge Jeff, the student Tung picked over him to be his successor - only he succeeded so much at facing Jeff he ended up killing the guy.
As for father issues, Geese has some of his own - his nobleman german father apparently never gave a damn about him or his mother, staying in Europe raising his legitimate son. So for lack of areal father young Geese takes on martial arts masters as the closest things he can get to father figures.
We know of at least Tung Fu Rue and Suo Tatsumi (Mary grandfather, whom apparently Geese ended up killing), and AoF events hint at some respect and admiration for Takuma Sakazaki's skills.
Those makeshift father figures failed him. Tung picked as a successor over him a guy Geese ended up besting to a fatal extent, Tatsumi didn't survive him either, and Sakazaki opposed him enough to only ever work with him under coersion and disguise. So much for Geese's respect for authority figures, as a cap that reached the rank of police commissioner he probably saw enough law enforcers leaning on the wrong side of the law he eventually not only leaned that way too, he got very good at it and became THE authority figure of his city by force.
At some point, despite all that he got married (in Garou Kain refers to Marie as Geese's wife), but geese isn't so far gone to think it'd be a good thing to expose his family to his life, so he maintains a distance from the son his wife bears him.
So when the kid grows up and starts hanging out with Jeff's adopted kid turned bum, he figures sooner or later his kid will learn some inevitable harsh life lesson - Geese himself surely learned a few, and it ultimately worked out for him. Good, bad, ultimately the mighty rule.

I don't really remember, the memories of what publications were released if any are hazy, messy and disorganized. Most of my KOF news came from Shambun, Gunsmith, and Yasakani's KOF BBS back then, and we had to share KOF vids through rm files to witness gameplay. I remember vaguely something like Chika, some KOF fangirl, translating tidbits here and there of KOF material, but it was so long ago that putting the pieces together from my perspective is a little hopeless, and I just have a terrible memory to boot.

Yeah, I agree that it does give at least Yashiro something, since it didn't seem like it bothered Shermie or Chris as much. But actual players don't really care about the characters beyond surface level, like their intros, taunts, victory quotes and win animations and their general in-game attitude and look. The rest is just icing on the cake story/lorefag material. You don't even see the band thing mentioned in the games, so whoever isn't able to speak or read Japanese is essentially left out of the one-sided feud that NFT had with Iori in the first place. Didn't you notice that, whenever you played the game (KOF97) itself, the only reference you got to the band feud thing was Yashiro's intro with Iori? So storyfags in America were left out anyway, and we're just left with that orochi thing. You had to visit websites that hopefully translated the material, because god forbid the USA website would ever tell you about a game that didn't even come stateside outside of arcades and NeoGeo itself (and who could even afford that?)
Now I wonder what the English KOF97 NG manual is like, to see if it even says anything. You know us ROM guys wouldn't have had access to that at the time.
