Here is what actually happened.
Route 66 (the map with the gag) launched about a week ago.
A day after release, there was a small patch. Some people noticed that the magazines were gone. Nobody cared. There was no SJW demand for the gag to be out. Blizzard didn't even mention a thing with regards to the gag. And noone continued to care until this butt situation.
It was a dumb gag that someone slid in and someone higher up didn't want it in there and it was quietly removed. That's it. There was no SJW outrage.

That was my favorite part of the backpeddling response. He tried so hard to pretend that it was already planned.
