One of the main reasons people hate open world games is because only 20% of all the land is taken up with actual interesting places or story buildings, while the rest is plain, flat land scattered with trees.
In this game they will actually need to design every single aspect of the terrain, because there is NO terrain. It's all rooftops. I think and hope that they'll make it work because this is a much more daunting task than a game like Far Cry 3/4, Assassin's Creed, etc, because they actually need to design and think through every single element for the open world.

People need to understand this. Everyone bashes open world because they're in game where they don't need to be. In Mirror's Edge, the whole game is about parkour. I WANT to spend a lot of time travelling between missions. That's what was fun to me in the original, is the running. I've spent over 110 hours in it. I've enjoyed every single second. All I wanted is to be able to explore and run freely and now we're actually getting that, but everyone is slamming into the ground because bad open world has been done to death.

While I agree that an open world could completely fuck it up, there is absolutely room for them to do things correctly. If they use smart design they can capitalize on the rooftop nature of their world to create a system of a nodes/links. You can only get from one rooftop to the next if they are of similar height or have some sort of transition element. This means they can design to have gratifying paths through the environment because they don't need to worry about the player needing to be able to move in any direction.
Hell, the nature of the movement mechanics could make optional collectibles actually fun, by placing them in actually challenging to reach areas whether through climbing, agility, or puzzles.
But the larger emphasis on fighting worries me a lot, I will admit.

Are you serious? There is a ton of obvious benefit for Mirror's Edge in an open world. Primarily the potential for players to master the environment to be able to determine the fastest route from A to B. In order to not be shit it will of course take not-shit level design, but there's tons of potential in that direction. They will need a lot of complexity and choices for moving through the environment while maintaining focus. It's a tall order that they certainly have a large chance of fucking up completely, but it's absolutely possible.

Mirror's Edge was never good. It was always a graphics > gameplay style game. It's a game where you mostly run, yet it somehow manages to be really slow, easy, and boring. It's also very buggy, with unreliable parkour mechanics, bad enemy AI, trial and error bullshit, etc. I beat the game in 5 hours in 1 sitting, and I was shocked that it wasn't longer. Nobody had told me how short this "amazing" game was. I beat it, uninstalled, and never touched the shit again.

They all have points to be fair. Mirrors Edge is a top 5 game for me. Not even last gen, just top 5. This was killed with open world no sense though, let alone anything else. Plus it looks really fucking ugly. I barely even remember the story of the first, and I've played the shit out of it. Who cares about the story?

As someone who's been sick of open world games well before it became trendy, this seems like the type of game where it would make sense. I feel like you're taking the word "open" too literally. There can still be linear segments with enclosed spaces. This just offers more landscape and paths. Nothing in the trailers have shown anything that looks so far from the original gameplay-wise.
Visual-wise too. I seriously don't get that complaint. it looks very similar to the original.

that was never the case though. The runners were neutral couriers who delivered goods for people, and some of those clients are people fighting the system. Faith is neutral until Kate gets caught up in the mess. Literally the only reason she is fighting the system is to save her sister.
