Now that the dust has apparently settled based on what im hearing I think that I can finally put an end to my inner thought and agree to the mass consensus that the board /v/ has come to and agree with them on every point that states that the game is probably absolute garbage even though 99% of them have probably not played the game and neither have I.
The enemy placement continues the philosophy from Dark Souls 2 and relies on large amounts of enemies and constant ambushes, I'm already at that damn winter town but I'm just fucking exhausted at how tedious it is because they keep throwing so many fucking mobs at you. I feel the enemy placement is worse than DS2 because ambushes are just so constant that they aren't even fun anymore and this is coming from someone that played through DS2 multiple times.

I'm not saying it has to be 1 on 1 encounters all the time but playing through 3 actually is a chore, you're constantly traversing a level activating enemy ambushes and every fight is a constant 3+ enemies at least with at least 1 of them spamming a projectile. The worst area I've been through so far was the fucking Cathedral with fucking enemies all over the place constantly dropping from the ceiling or climbing up from the rooftops, it didn't help that the boss was actually a fucking trash mob boss that had so many constant respawning enemies that it would drop your framerate.

It's actually the best in the souls series. There's an actually reasonable difficulty curve that escalates as you continue the game, with the only notable jumps (or pitfalls) in difficult being with pontiff (probably the third most difficult boss of the game), Yhorm (for being an easy as fuck gimmick boss), and Nameless King (an optional boss, but the hardest in the entire series, Old Hunters included). All the bosses are also amazing, and even bosses like Yhorm which don't surmount any challenge are still atmospherically great or fun due to interesting twists. The only not well done bosses in the game are probably old demon king (Dude asylum demon + firesage LMAO) and ancient wyvern (basically dragon god 2.0 + trash mobs defending the path you need to take). Other than that all the bosses are great.

Dark Souls is the single deepest, most challenging, most skill-based game ever created. There is not a single other game in any genre that comes close to the level of skill Dark Souls requires.
This is why Dark Souls threads are the best, most intelligent threads on /v/. Only the smartest, brightest, and most patient people post in them. Essentially, the very best of humanity posts in them.
Conversely, the only people who don't like Dark Souls clearly don't have the skills to handle its depth. It is too hardcore for them. That's okay though. Games like Halo exist for people like them. Dark Souls Hunter fans are too good to hold grudges.

It was well designed, it just had performance problems. It wasn't the only place that had performance problems either.
There wasn't really too much of DkS1 that was poorly designed. It was really just the non-dlc post-anor londo boss fights were a bit underwhelming and bed of chaos was just bullshit. Other than that it was excellent and a far step above the lazy shit design DkS2 got.

"What went wrong" basically means lets chat about this game at this point.
The only thing I don't like so far from what I've seen is casting speed being tied to DEX instead of Attunement, Sorcery not having any cool new spells aside from the Soul Longsword, Miracles still being underwhelming outside of hex ones, no Bonefist (that I know of) andno plume for Ornstein's helm.Otherwise everything new looks awesome and most of what I wanted is back including the few good things from 2 like the Fume Ultra Greatsword.

Because people are idiots. As a souls vet, I recently completed each game. My playthrough of DeS took approximately 12 hours. DaS took me 25 hours, and that includes the dlc content. DaS 2 took 20 hours without dlc. DaS 3 took 30 hours on the dot when including nameless king and about 2 hours of pvp.

Is almost entirely built on both rehashing items/equipment from the previous games and a significant amount of pandering to DS1.
Some areas are straight up bloodborne, some are literally chalice assets, some are enemy design and villages. The enemies in the Boreal valley are so bloodborne its insane.
I have yet to beat it, and from what I've seen the DS1 pandering only increases beyond Illithyll so joy joy.
I've done a complete 180 on the stance that this will be the last souls game From makes, I wanted them to keep going after this. Now I see that DeS, DaS1 and BB are their best works because they actually had a new setting and couldn't rely on their previous work to fill the gaps of design they needed.

The best way I can phrase this game is that its tiring. Its well made, and fairly well put together but for every new item or enemy there are a dozen things that the series already had.
The music and some of the bosses are certainly a highlight of the series, but the game leans far too hard on rehashed material, even for a FROM game.

I disagree. There are only maybe two boring plains levels. A lot of the bosses are easy but every Souls game has a bunch of boring easy bosses. Only about 3 in Dark Souls are tough and memorable.
To me what ruined Dark Souls 1 was the hikes. The walk from spawn to O&S or spawn to Anor Londo arrows or spawn to Seathe are just absurdly long with nothing that is remotely a threat on the way. Not even talking Izalith or the swamp to amazing chest. Or the forest/valley of drakes/darkroot whatever shit levels where nothing happens beyond the first few forest enemies.
Dark Souls 2 doesn't do the good bits as well as Dark Souls 1 until the DLC, but it does not waste your time like Dark Souls 1 does.

It's harder, I've beaten both.
OoK can be paried, backstabbed, and his healthbar isn't nearly as long. In addition, with BB healing is so quick, even a hard as fuck boss like orphan struggles to punish you for healing. Once you learn how to parry 1st form orphan, he's easy as fuck. Just like once you learn how to dodge the wyvern mode attacks of nameless, so both first forms can be disregarded.
Second form orphan, again, can be parried if you're good, and has several really easy to parry parts (the basic attack and the long range dash). Once you learn how to dodge his attacks, he has long sections of recovery between each where you can get a good hit or two in, and due to the low amount of recovery in BB, you can dodge immediately after attacking.
For Nameless (god phase), many of his attacks have almost no recovery needed, so he'll start an attack in the middle of you trying to punish him, meaning for many attacks it's fairly random whether you'll be able to punish or not. In addition, healing is much slower in DaS, so you'll only ever be able to heal when you'd normally otherwise punish him. Finally, He does a lot more damage than Orphan did.
He's objectively a harder boss. You just got gud.

The 4 lords and final boss?
Big guy and Aldritch are REALLY cool designs / lore, but big guy's fight is a gimmick fight, and aldritch is pretty basic nothing too special. Abyss watchers is really great, and one of the most cinematic bosses in the series, but can be cheesed with parries / backstabs. It's like Artorias + Maria. Homo twins are an awesome fight though, it's like fighting a "teleports behind you" shitposter.
The final boss is the best final boss in the series though. Pretty challenging too, and can't be cheesed. Personally my favorite boss of all the games, I won't spoil it.
