No, it's mainly because two things which are somewhat important in RPG are fucking abysmal in SO4:
- The story is really below average for a JRPG and feels like a fucking filler for like 3/4 of its length: like 4 or 5 hours into the game your characters are headed to En-II which is right next to where you are but retarded shenanigans happen and you are thrown away in another dimension, a uninteresting medieval planet and so on. Once you end up finally getting to En-II you receive the final mission: kill the bad guy. Everything that happened between the "Let's go to En-II" and getting to it was mostly irrelevant and only made most of the characters look like edgy retards.
- The characters, pretty much only Myuria, Bacchus, Reimi and surprisingly Arumat aren't either retards or edgelords to varying degrees (Arumat actually is so beyond edgelord that he ends ups being a pretty chill guy), they just are irrelevant most of the time. The shiniest example was when the plot completely shafted Reimi by making her get space AIDS when she was about to take the lead of the party because the MC was too busy crawling in his skin because his lack of brain cells wiped a whole planet. Then you have the trinity of retards called Lymle, Meracle and Sarah making every cutscene they appear in, a cringefest. Many 'kay PTSD were had.
The gameplay and craft were pretty good when you manage to not give a single shit about the plot and characters..

The plot isn't entirely coherent. The game overall suffered from lack of unified direction. The character Alisha, which was initially presented as the female lead, and is still quite popular, ends up leaving your party very abruptly and awkwardly about 8 hours in, and essentially acts as the guest character (like Flynn / Asch / Kratos). Shortly after a new female character Rose (who has less fan popularity) is shoe-horned into your party equally abruptly and awkwardly, as a replacement. The main character Sorey, is pretty boring, and his love interest is his male childhood best friend Mikleo.
Gameplay wise, the restrictions on party formation can be frustrating (human characters can't be removed from the party), which also gimps multiplayer. The new battle camera is pretty terrible, especially when fighting big monsters and/or in cramped spaces. The new equipment system, while interestingly complex, also involves a lot of tedious inventory management.
The one plus side is they did manage to get Go Shiina to do a few music tracks, so the OST is actually pretty nice, and they made good use of it in the game.
Why is the game even on PS3 to begin with? Did development begin on PS3, but it was too far along to scrap it entirely?
