Mods fixed this calamity of the mechanics to some extend, but at the same time made a game so fucking unstable that it was CTDing every 15 minutes.

It's kind of overrated. It was pretty unique at its time so it won't hold up as well today. It drags towards the 75% point but the village and church are great.
Also, you have to escort a useless character for a decent amount of time. Very not fun and annoying.

I agree that the combat can get pretty dull. I was able to soldier through it and though I thought that ultimately other aspects (atmosphere, specially in Chapter 4, quests and a few of the characters) make up for the combat, I'd say you're well within your rights to quit because of the combat if you really want.
While I like the game, I cant understand the people that shit all over 2 and 3 in favour of 1.

Let me elaborate on RE4. I think it was the first game to have that type of 3rd person over the shoulder combat and it is largely why it was so well-received. It's been refined more and more so it might feel dated being the first but I haven't played it in a long time so I don't know. I don't love the game but that's just my preferences, it is an objectively quality game with a really spooky atmosphere.
