the RPS triangle is an important part sure, but thats the same shit other fighting games have, just not as clearly apparent, you need to do mixups and baits to take advantage of it. If your finding animations sluggish you probably arent making use of cancels at all.
It's not on the same level as SF and Tekken and what not in terms of complexity sure, but its FAR from the babby game you seem to be implying it is.

HUGE part of SF and Tekken depth come from attacks being so fast that even if you are minus or plus in certain situations, the situation comes and goes so fast that a human mind is pretty much always behind the action. In this game, it's almost impossible to whiff an attack, and after someone gets ONE BLOCKED HIT in, he's in your face and the RPS is literally unavoidable. It's like a constant wakeup game, except not on wakeup but on block too. Even though the RPS is part of SF for example too, the rules of it are very situational and not straight up forced "press a button to guess" by your opponent. (You can't tech throws here, infinitely armored focus, normals somehow beat throws no matter what)
You literally cannot anti-air by reaction, and even if you try to, it will trade by a very high chance. Normal combos last as long as an ultra animation from SF4 making it a snorefest.
It is the ultimate fighting babby game. It also flopped hard on arcades and I can fully see why. I didn't put much thought into this post and won't argue this further because I'm tired as fuck and going to sleep (partly because of Pokken). See you in some other thread

Basically, you said that you can't react to what people are doing, to solve that, you need to understand the tools of all the other pokemon in the roster and be able to predict what actions they will take when your reaction time alone isn't enough to deal with an issue.
If you gave pokemon the ability to customize their moves as you suggested, you have just exponentially increased the possible tools each of your opponents could have access too, making prediction much much more challenging.

If you let him move around he looks good, but he's not. All you have to do is respond to what he does with an appropriate button of your own and the vortex gets smashed.

Surprised there aren't more Shadow/Mewtwo players though, Mewtwo is terrible at range and amazing in melee, Shadow is the opposite- for both you only really have to learn half the playstyle. Garchomp, too, except he's good at both ranged and melee, but only when not in field. In field, you barely have to do more than spam dig, so again you only have to learn half the playstyle.
Don't have the game myself yet but I tried it out today.

Pokken is definitely a game that amply rewards the better player in satisfying ways. When you're really in someone's head you can just absolutely fuck the living daylights out of them. And I appreciate that. Winning feels good and losses feel fair. A game I can grind and not feel salty about is a winner in my book. Will happily play this whenever I need a break from SFV.

There are reasons for that.
Before I decided to Suicune my shit up I mained Sceptile.
He has no good long range attacks, at least none that hit spammers at the back. No ways of getting in close or punishing. All of his attacks are incredibly close range meaning if you aren't in their face don't bother.
