The only aspect that's aged poorly in retrospect are the QTEs, which have been done to death.

RE4 has flawless shooting mechanics, level design, and enemy variety. It's only real flaws are the aforementioned QTEs and that the castle and island aren't quite as amazing as the village.
On a pure gameplay fun level, RE4 is timeless and is still a blast just to run through even after my dozen playthroughs over the years.

It kind of is an important game as far history goes, seeing as how what we know as the modern third person shooter and third person shooting in general was inspired by it. It had a dramatic affect on the industry.

Some other aspects it nails perfectly:
>bosses, both small-scale fights like Krauser and Right Hand and big "epic" battles against giant monsters
>weapons and treasure in the environment, rewarding exploration in semi-open environments along the game's general track
>cheesy fun cutscenes with goofy dialog that's still quoted to this day (pic related)

>weapon variety and great well-paced upgrade system as you progress

Oh, and it's probably the only game that benefited well from a conversion to motion controls on Wii/PS3. Playing with a Wiimote/Motion+ controller is actually great considering how the highly RE4 rewards precise aiming.

This, playing it on the Wii was like a different game altogether. Plus all the bonus content was nice.
I played it on GC way back when it still had a purple corner on the boxart.
