underrail thread

last thread archived before I could ask a question:
Is persuasion or intimidation too important? I'm thinking of dropping them in favor of more crafting skills for my build
>>
>>322060694
No.
>>
>>322060694
Not too important. You can't get the good end of some quests without them, but other than that they aren't of much use.
>>
It's debatable, the social skills are all pretty 50/50 in what you get back. Not too many intimidation/persuasion options but they are there.

But what do I know, I almost always start a new character with doctor+packrathound.
>>

>>322060694
Not really. Pers doesn't influence nearly enough shit to be of importance and the best use intimidation is tied to a feat.
>>
It's serious time mother fuckers.

Psi builds are quite powerful, that's true.
What about mono Psi builds though? Like Thought Control only.

Would that be a challenge to play through the game with Thought Control being your only means of offense?
>>
>>322060934
>>322060989
>>322061108
All right, I'm definitely dropping that for more crafting.
>>
>>322060694
For everything practical to gameplay, Persuasion is irrelevant.

For Story it's a hard-requirement for a pretty good number of endings.
>>
>>322061121
You can get pretty far. But you'll have to branch out to using grenades 'n' shit, every so often. Also, bots will wreck your shit if you're pure thought control.

How did I let myself get suckered into this. I knew a sniper wouldn't be any good in caves.
>>
....Fast metabolism or Nimble for a Psi character

I know, those two feats suck ass but it's for level 1, I don't have much of a choice here.
>>
there some reason as to why fallout is a shooter, this gameplay just doesn't work. its not intuitive or inmersive. like i created a character, accepted the psiconics path but in order to learn a skill i had to do a quest. good, the quest was to shoot a rathound with a special bolt (i got 2 of them) but i chose a firearm instead of a crossbow before and the crosbow was expensive as hell and no way my character could adquire it. so i could not do the quest or powers. eventually i steal a crossbow i go and shoot a rat, i miss the first shot but landed the second, once i killed the rathound and picked up what it left i ran to complete the quest only to learn i got one of these things to level up, a rathound ear or something, so shooting and killing the rathound wasnt enough apparently or there is a drop rate, and with only 2 bolts, good. now my character is stuck at completing that quest and is usable to get its psiconic powers. really there no way to inmerse yourself in a game that just doesnt make sense.

The game was recently released and people are gonna drop in and out of the thread and if there's no thread they'll make a new one since they're unaware of the /vg/ thread.
/vg/ is where threads go when general interest in the game dies down and all that's left is a few retards participating in some inane circlejerk.

What are some must have feats for a crossbow user? I'm looking at concussive shots or kneecap shot right now. Doing traps and throwing (mostly for grenades) on the side, as well as a bit of crafting, if that helps give an idea of what I should go for.
>>
>>322061438
I had 70-80 at medium distance with my 1st crafted sniper, without a bipod.

You can't expect to have 95% at max range from get go. Use bipod mod a normal scope for +20% precision early on, throw flares amd lure enemies into them, get night vision goggles asap.

Snipers are able to one shot everything in the game. Well except the Final boss, needed 2 for him, still took my one turn.

Actually anon whenever I viable-post it's because these threads are full of people telling people every build is viable, then tell them to avoid entire feats and skills as they're completely useless. Just like on Steam where people will say with a straight face Underrail is a story game. And on another forum the Underrail thread goes a week with no posting until someone posts "Hey no let's not let this thread die!"

http://steamcommunity.com/app/250520/discussions/0/458604254430186936/

My build got me through Depot A just fine, then I stopped playing because I gave the game that long to get interesting and it didn't.
>>
>>322065013
I'm pretty sure the muties don't respawn, not sure about the mutants.
>>
>>322064732
I go with

Interlopper 2
Quick Tinkering 4 (tr 25)
Trap Expert 6 (tr 30)
ambush 8 (st 40)
Opportunist 10
special tactics 10
sharpshooter 12
critical power 16
deadly snares ( tr 50)
elemental bolts
sprint 20

don't recommend wasting points on throw since you can use it from the get go and it's more of an "oh shit" button. Lots of fun putting a bear trap in a door way and throwing a molotov inside a room packed with enemies to watch them burn
>>
I got some "cybernetic spawn" to deliver and told the Protectorate head honcho about it and he told me to go visit his second-in-command.

Take all the crossbow related feats, all of them are worth it.

Aimed shot and Snipe will be used the most frequently so get them fast, kneecap is really good too.
>>
>>322065402
I leveled up some throw just cause otherwise the chance to throw things in the proper spot seems to be pretty low. I was running a build before with 0 throw and i kept blowing myself up. I don't really know a good spot to stop though, i'm at 20 right now and I feel like I have too few points to go around, so that might be my limit.

>>
>>322064832

>>
>>322065852
Quite a few actually.
I'm at the "Go to core city" quest and I've found 6-7 hidden stashes with a handful more secret doors and what not.

They effectively negate all the light penalties. You probably won't find them before after Depot A, so try throwing flares so the enemies run into them for a clear shot, shot those who are in a bright area first, and get that bipod mod.

Not worth it m8, you won't get more than one shot anyways, use bipod. Better to actually hit than have spare AP whole missing.

Reaper should be use with anatomically aware scope, bipod and smart module.

Later on you will spearhead, which can actually shoot twice with rapid reloader.

But to answer your question, any weapons trader. The one from Core City is probably your best bet at the moment. Mechanic traders have some quality frames from tome to time, too.

Just started the game recently and its my second build. Fucking hell its really System Shock kind of love all over again.

Yes, you can't buy them, only the frames to craft them with, and those start spawning in shops later in the game.

Your character was stuck because you are a moron. You get a fucking free crossbow in that initial quest, and there is plenty of fucking time and rathounds to get the samples. At close range its fucking easy to hit a rathound with 0 crossbow skill.

Although I admit the game only really kicks in at about level 4.
>>
>>322066714

Its not only about gun skill, tons of other factors affect accuracy, weapon condition, darkness and a bunch of others.

Night vision really does help a fucking lot, thats why you need energy to use the googles.

They are used to craft special ammo.

Blueprints are rarely sold by wespon traders.

They go as follows:

5mm- extra electrcity damage, requires 20 mechanics and 20 elecronics

9mm- extra acid damage, 20 mechanics and 30 chemistry

7.62- 50% chance to deal 100% weapon damage over 3 turns, only 20 mechanics

8.6- 35% chance to set target on fire, 20 mechanics 60 chemistry

.44- small explosion, 20 mechanics 60 chemistry

12.7- deal bio damage and leaves a toxic gas, 20 mechanics and 35 in biology and chemistry
>>
>>322071505
>I get the feeling bullets are going to be one hell of a cash sink

Depends what pistol build you want to make. Normal pistol or energy/chem pistols, imo energy pistols are better because they give you more options: electro pistols and plasma pistols with aimed shot and crit damage talents are fucking nuclear bombs.

it's pretty straightforward, don't go too low with agility, you willl need at least 6 strength for steady aim, 10 dex (for gunslinger +dex on lvl up to lower pistol Ap costs) and 10 Per for sharpshooter. Recklessness will give you another +5 crit chance and you can get more on gear. The res of your ability points you can distribute as you like

>>
>roll psi character (metathermics)
>everyone on /v/ says im a babby because psi characters are overpowered

>roll a throwing knives and grenades only joke character
>it's better than my main by a wide margin

Seriously, the grenadier trait is fucking ridiculous. 2 turn cooldown basic grenades are better than any low level spell, and specialty/high end grenades are just as good or better than higher level mentor-only spells. Throwing knives ain't nothing to be fucked with either. Split throw + hypertoxicity means you can stack poisons dealing 150 damage after only one turn.
>>
Should I get this game or Xenonauts?
>>
Its great how sniper characters benefit from having good traps.

Really makes you feel like a sniper setting up his traps and planning your takedowns.

Yeah but if you keep chucking grenades all over the place, you're gonna cause a complete cave-in.

The power of psi characters is largely from utility in various incapacitating debuffs, enrage and force wall, not in plain damage.
Not that it's lacking in plain damage either, thermodynamic destabilization is absolutely beastly.

PSI is easy because they get access to everything but they don't specialize.

I miss being a stealthy sniper you could hit into the 300-500s and just delete the biggest thing in sight....but then raging 5+ guys with 1 spell is also strong.
>>
Is there any way to get disassemble without spending a precious feat point on it?
>>
>>322074907
Most builds are stronger than the Psi ones, with a few exceptions.
Psi works best when combined with other things that it can complement.

If /v/ wants a challenge, then try a Thought Control only character.
You'll find it pretty decent at the start, but it rapidly starts to lose it's potency.
Not even LoC can save you when you start dealing with enemies that are immune to mind control abilities.

You shouldn't take anything /v/ says about this seriously. Most people in these threads don't even account for stat bonuses and skill check difficulty limits when planning their builds.

Alright /v/ I need help. I went for a stealth/crossbow build and it seems like I got completely fucked over. I have no problem downing 1 guy from stealth before he can even react.

But even if they don't have line of sight on me, or the guy I shot, the rest of the mobs argo as well. Then I just die.

Am I doing it wrong or should I just reroll because crossbows suck?

beauty of crossbow is that you can use different bolts, incendiary bolts hit multiple targets and set them on fire which is nice for crowd control

>>

>Psi only

Throwing. But seriously, AR is good if you have a 2nd burst (feat related), you can wipe out a bunch of knobs at once as long as they're in your firing cone; Thought control has excellent crowd control with Locus; Metathermics has a half-decent firebomb and Exothermic is great vs melee fags. Melee/psi is probably the weakest (although i've not tried melee) because the psi you'll be taking (telekinesis) doesn't have a good crowd pleaser. Telekinetic Proxy can do some crowd damage but not much.

One of the things you have to learn about Underrail, usually the hard way, is that you probably are not going to be able to just focus on one combat skill and have an effective build.

Like anon above said the best way to solve your problem is to use traps and caltrops in combination with your crossbow sniping, while also take advantage of special bolts. You have to manipulate the environment so that you *can't* be ganged up on all at once and your ability to quickly pick off a single target can be used one by one.

AR is kinda supposed to go with heavy armor. You'll need 9 STR for the best heavy armors but you only need 7 for the heaviest AR.

Check the feats in the wiki and their requirements and distribute your points in STR/CON/PER accordingly and remember you get an extra stat point every 4 levels so you don't need to max anything from the start.
>>
>>322091741
Only read the spoiler when you have completely given up.
At the bottom right hand side of the map there is a trap door that takes you to the third floor. You can take the vents right to it and completely avoid the robots. Its locked but you can pick it. If you can't pick it, the key is also hidden on the second floor.

Ive spent forever just trying to sneak around anyways, and also I am out of ammo and the dude who sells the ammo hasn't refreshed yet.

How long does it usually take for stores to refresh their inventory, im imagining they do otherwise that would be retarded because there would be no ammo to buy.

It gives you synergy (bumps it to a higher level than you've spent points on, it's the number in parenthesis) with some skills, the one of primary interest being Guns, which, the higher it is, the higher your to hit %. It also helps with detecting hidden passages but that's a non-concern.

Essentially, put it as high as it needs to be for you to get the feats that relate to the ARs, the ones that are worth it anyway, like Commando (which funnily enough doesn't have a per requirement) or Concentrated Fire (8).

I'm not doing the research I need to to say this but I reckon 7 to start would be enough and you can give it an extra point at some point.

I think the developer went a little crazy with skills. We didn't need 5 different crafting skills, 2 different ways to open locks, or 2 dodge skills.

It's none of those things.

He just did not read all the quest dialog. The NPC says "If you don't have a crossbow you can barrow mine from my locker". The NPC gives you 10 bolts and iv always had a 100% drop rate provided you get a hit. Sure maybe you get really shitty RNG and miss all 10 shots but then you just reload a save and the your fine.

The trick to crossbows is you get a pretty large loss in accuracy if you move and then shoot. That's probably why he was having such a hard time.
>>
>>322092440
AND lockpicks are consumables
when will this nonsense stop being the norm
>>
>>322094113
Why not just turn it into an FPS then? Making tough decisions during character creation/leveling and your playthrough being molded by those decisions is exactly what makes a RPG a RPG. At least a proper one.

By his logic, you could ask "why even make guns a skill since most the game is hidden behind angry mobs?" and the response would be exactly the same. You take guns and mop those mobs OR you don't take guns and sneak around them instead. Locked doors are the same thing. Pick them or go find a key. It's all about designing play areas to be suitable for different approaches and a good design will at the same time reward AND punish the decisions you made creating you character by allowing you to solve the problem in one or maybe some but not in all possible ways.

Are you having a giggle? You reduce the number of skills by removing useless skills/merging similar skills and then also reduce the number of skill points the player gets. The same "Tough decisions" remain and have a bigger impact on the game with less of a mushy impact. It's the same reason a granular skill system like Fallout has less immediate impact than a less granular system like in 3rd edition D&D. A 55% to 65% difference in a Fallout skill is less noticeable and impactful than a 3rd edition D&D skill going from 4 to 5 points. And even less difference than in games where skills are all or nothing, like in Infra Arcana where you have a skill or you don't. But naturally that means "Why not just turn it in to an FPS then".

Christ, fucking Underrail fans.

>>322096780
I have no problem with the removal of actually useless skills (but the the bone you picked should've been mercantile) or simplifying "0-100 in 25 level intervals" to 1-4. But you're arguing the removal/merger of useful skills that do impact how the game is played because for some reason you think every lock should be exactly the same because there's some overlap or redundancy is some situations. If anything the change should be how one type of lock refers to doors only and the other for containers with little overlap. Except what you're defending is dumbing down for the sake of it, making the characters less nuanced and the amount of choice inferior.

You set up a system of skills and then design the game around them as best you can. What you don't do is remove skills outright because the world you designed doesn't (in your opinion) take advantage of it to the fullest extent. You make it better. You sound like the Mass Effect 2 design team. "Oh no, the inventory is kinda rubbish" "I know, we'll remove it". And then suddenly you're playing a TPS and not a RPG.
>>

I don't notice a difference.

I tested it on a Mutant at the Junkyard.

First hit of Overload did 53
Then 46
then 54
Then I used Premeditation and threw a Mental Breakdown on him (So now he's up to 35 stacks of Mental Subversion)
Next hit crit for 114 (Which feels low as fuck considering that was a hit with Mental Breakdown on him while he's at 35 fucking stacks of Subversion AND it was a crit)
Then my last hit did 56

Would you rather that only 10% is locked behind it so it just feels like a waste of skill points?

>That's not even a choice. There is no freedom of choice here.
Yes it is a choice you faggot, it's in no way mandatory to take them.

Finished the game without both. Found pretty much all odditites, reached level cap, swimming in money, crafted all the best gear I wanted.

Yeah, we didn't need 4 weapon skills either. Just merge it into "weapons" and call it a day, right?

Or even better, merge ALL the skills into "I'm a faggot" skill.

>Should've just merged all the crafting into "science" and "mechanics" for crafting, the two dodges into 1 "dodge" skill, and just one "open locks" skill.
Just fuck off with those smart ideas.

I don't want to be able to craft everything because I took 2 skills, nor do I want to open everything because I took "open everything" skill.

This one is actually more complicated than it seems.

They used to be a normal force that was just pushing in the opposite direction, but recently a Protectorate spy became one of their leaders who started to recruit dumbfucks and psychopaths to discredit the whole group.

I have literally just found this in Depot A.
I'm playing a Thought Control only character too.
I've played through this point like 8 times so far and I've never come across one of these things.
I am so fucking happy right now. This ability is absolutely amazing. It destroys other Psi users so fucking hard.

Also, the reason I made this character again despite my other Thought Control only character making it past Depot A, is because I didn't have the option to go to Silent Isle for some strange reason. The captain guy had no dialogue option for it. Anyway though, after one of my other, non Psi characters made his way to silent isle, I suspected that the pillar might require a thought control user to activate it, judging by its dialogue. Lo and behold, I was fucking right, so now my new Psi character can summon fucking dopplegangers.

I can't believe that at this point, my last Thought Control user only had access to fucking the initial 3 spells.

This is glorious.

>>

>>
>>322107876
Eh, half the fun is figuring it out yourself, but I guess I can give you a few pointers.

>What requirements are needed to be met to for example use the shield or the heavier pistols?
Shields have a STR requirement from 4 to 6, depending on the plates used to make it. Only Riot Gear can have them.

You can find riot armors with shields in shops, but it's probably better to take tailoring and mechanics to craft them yourself.

Pistols have no STR requirement whatsoever, but there is a feat that increases your crit chance the more AP it takes to fire your pistol, requires 6 STR.

Get your DEX high, every point above 5 reduces the cost to fire a pistol by 1 and there really isn't many ways to increase your AP count.

PER is also important to hit anything.

Take Aimed Shot, Expertise, Execute and Kneecap Shot feats, rapid fire and Point Shot are also very good at short ranges.

Find a way to stun/incapitate your enemies to use Execute on them, flashabangs will work well if you want to throw nades.

If you want to rely on crits, use a hammerer pistol and puh your crit chance/damage by all means possible.

If not, take a Neoluger since it has the most reliable damage spread and bonus precision.

Yuo can also try energy/chemical pistols.

>>322108417
Oh, right. All the mental subversion does is reduce resolve.

Resolve doesn't really change damage all that much, it's more about resisting psi stuns/incapacitation.

Metro in Fallout 3 is nothing more than a huge dungeon crawler, I don't know who are you trying to convince otherwise.

The only reason to have tunnels in a modern/post apocalyptic setting is either to make
1. Vaults
2. Old subway tunnels

>whats your assassin build, anon?

dagger/stealth focused on getting all the crit talents like recklessness, weaponsmith, crit power, ripper, cheap shots, etc. Cheap shots is fucking god mode 1vs1 if the rng favors you because of how many time you hits with dagger+high dex+tabi. You can literally skip your turn once you get the incapacitation and stunlock a single enemy. Once you get cu-throats you can do that with two enemies as long as one is a humonaoid. Only weakness is heavy armor stuff (you rely on critcs and before getting to midgame you don't crit often enough) and huge crowds (but you have grenades for that). You also have really high stealth and can obviously skip any trash encounter you want more or less. It's not as strong as some other builds but it's pretty fun and you have to actually think when you fight instead of mowing everything down with AR or psi powers.
>>
>>322111378
Wow, why am I not surprised it looks exactly like a ripoff of fallout (which was in turn a ripoff of wasteland and mad max) and metro?

What's the deal with crawlers? Are they invisible or invincible when they're on the ceiling? I'm walking through some cave, then they drop down and sting me, then go on the ceiling right after without giving me a chance to do anything. Then I just walk away. I've killed a couple because I got lucky and they didn't run away when they first attacked, but most of the time I have no way of killing them.

Don't forget the level design. It's above and beyond the levels in Fallout, and combined with all the tools, traps and skills it allows for some incredibly entertaining scenarios.

>>
>>322112291
They hide somewhere on the map. You can bump into them or bomb most likely places.
>>

They hide on the map in stealth. If you suspect they're nearby, you should stealth up. Even with a fairly average detection, you should usually spot them before they spot you.

It's mostly fine. The game recently came out and you can't figure stuff like that out accurately on your own. I have 7 will, 20 thought control, and I just got a level up. I'll try to find an exact value for it. I'm assuming that 7 will is one of the requirements and I'm hoping it's not any higher than 60 for thought control.

>Wikis take time to be totally reliable.

Yeah. And it takes even more time if the only contributor is the dev of the game, and he keeps some of the information vague or completely missing on purpose. Not to mention that the information that is there is all based on the development version, and there's even a disclaimer at the first page saying that the info isn't 100% reliable. If I were you, I'd wait until he opens up the wiki to public editing (which, according to him, is coming soon) and the people can actually update the whole thing properly and make it relevant.

Yes to all of these to different degree.
It is very much a dungeon crawler in that you are mostly going to explore caves and tunnels fighting or sneaking by shit that want to kill you.
It does have a story. Hardly a literary masterpiece, but it has some nice twists and is actually somewhat more complex than it might first seem. You are not going to read a lot though.
There is some roleplaying, but not that much. Think about Deus Ex level.
There are morality options and political games, but as said before this is not going to win a purlitzer nor does it really want to.

It's a confusing game at the start, but you get the hang of it soon enough.

I don't think wandering around in the Underrail ever stops being confusing though.
>>
>>322123938
It's not that hard. Try to follow that picture guide for character creation, but Even with a shitty build much of the game will be fine, just bring along molotovs. I roleplay as a jew so I had to dump a bunch of points into mercantile and pick the doctor perk even though the guide says not to.

>Can you fuck up a build in this game?

>I'm, not far in, but should I reroll any?

Guns and stealth are very handy and go great together. Persuasion is pretty useless (except for the rare speech check) and intimidation isn't really useful except for the Yell feat.

It's not worth rerolling based on that alone. Whatever you do, do not put points into mercantile though. It is 100% useless in this game.

You can straight up sell credits and charons back and forth if they have them - Their both simply items that they accept for their value worth. So buy whatever with charons, then trade your credits in. Far more efficient than buying them from the money changer.
