You could try out Squad (it's made by the developers of the famous Project Reality mod from Bf2) as it for sure will be a pretty good game once it's 100% finished.
But for that i'd recommend you to try it the PR:Standalone first to see if you like the kind of gameplay or not.
Eurotruck Simulator 2 can be pretty comfy, it has fine gameplay, many mods and good community.

A game I'd truly consider a hidden gem is Hammerfight. You basically control a steampunk flying machine in 2D space with your mouse and it's got a physics weapon attached to it and you fight other flying machines. It's EXTREMELY fun and satisfying.
Also, a bit of an unorthodox suggestion but I'm currently playing through Silent Hill 2 for the first time and I'm enjoying it immensely. It's better than most horror games.

Pros:
*Amazing art design
*Great storyline
*Funny jokes and pop culture references
*Just dang fun to play
Cons (more cosmetic than anything):
*If you choose to change your costume to play as Tostada rather than Juan, the game doesn't adapt to that, so people will still refer to you as male or call you Juan.
*Multiplayer isn't all that good, atleast to me.
It's an amazing platformer and offers great replayability with it's hidden collectibles, secret endings, and hard mode.

Not at all sure what you've played and what you haven't but Alan Wake is one of my most favorite games of last gen. my brother bought an Xbox a couple years ago which included a download code for the game and I went in completely blind.
I'm seriously surprised at how mostly under the radar this game went but it's absolutely amazing. Plot is a horror writer takes a vacation to a weird mountain town and things he supposedly wrote but can't remember doing so are actually happening. It has a real Steven King feel to the whole story and the combat is decent too. I'm playing it again as I bought it from a humble bundle sale a while ago but its also on sale now for $7.

Rogue Legacy is actually something you have to experience.

Secrets of Grindea;
Though still in early acess it's a incredible good J-ARPG.The best part of the game are the bosses, all of them differ from each other and hard mode don't just increase the HP or enemies they get new mechanics and shit.

Strike Suit has no multiplayer.
If you want a pure gameplay experience, I recommend getting Strike Suit Infinity instead. It's the same game but basically Zero is the story component while Infinity is an arcade version comprised of challenge maps. Infinity is infinitely better if you just want to have fun (no pun intended)

Great game that I'd recommend would be Intruder. Think of it as a team based sneaking thing with one side as guards and the other as intruders. Communication is only through the use of radios which enemies can hear if they're in proximity resulting in the use of in built hand signals. Cool stuff like that really seperates it from the rest of the stock so I advise you check it out. Community is really quiet though so I'd advise you to get it with a few friends as well.

I looked into it. The biggest problem I have with it is I mainly want something to kill the time before I go back to university in January. Strike Suit Zero was kind of an exception since it looked absolutely baller to play with friends, assuming the game itself was actually good. Plus, I really like sci-fi.

if you're into sci fi I would really recommend Astebreed, it's single player but it's bullet hell if you're at all into the genre. really fun and fast paced action
I would also recommend Edge of Space, it's terraria in space but not as abandoned as Starbound was
if you want more tower defense with co-op, Sol Survivor is a good choice. there's no build limit to the stuff you can have in game too.
