Sure. You lose the feeling of teamwork, but the core gameplay is the same and pic related is probably the best way to play it on the PC.

The older the games the less refined the games are. Monster hit boxes are larger than the animations. They act more robotic, less weapon/skill variety. I've been playing since Freedom 1 and was Silver grown on MH4 before my 3DS died and I lost my save data. You can emmulate and still play online with tungle/hamachi/whatever the kids use today.
DESU though there really isn't a story so I don't know how much you'd get out of playing them apart from seeing all the different villages and monsters, but MH Cross looks to have that covered so I'd just wait till then

Portable 3rd has coop through emulation, and plays well. 2nd generations is where the unwieldiness at.
I'm trying to get into freedom unite solo but all the weapons are shit save for the hammer and great sword, and those are the dullest weapons around.

Recently did HR Dala (the wycoon one in 7* that hits harder) solo. 37.5 min with the Reggie GS. One of the best fights I ever had in MH. I'm G2 right now, but I did it with a HR armor and a HR weapon. Such a great fight. Also anyone here got any tips for Fire Drill?

I still prefer the longsword for practically any encounter where the head is smaller than the body

I think the opposite of you when it comes to LS, I think it needed the 3 bar system to encourage smarter play and wanting to find a way to finish your combo and be rewarded. In the 2 series it just felt like a SnS but with no guard and a longer reach.

I liked the simplicity the LS offered along with a depth unlike any other, as literally every button push triggered a movement of its own.
Now you just mash the R button to rev up that charge bar so you can git the max power or you lose out on efficiency which we can't have now can we
