The only thing this game ever did, in any way, to insinuate that the monsters around you are in any way threats on your life, is have you take easily restorable damage from attacks you can't dodge. Most of them come to like you so much that they just walk away from battle, the rest get scared the fuck off and run away, and a good number you simply walk away from. Outward appearances are the ENTIRE POINT of this game, just that some aren't the same as others.
Not to mention Genocide Run where the entire game is literally "Kill every single thing you are physically capable of killing before the game tells you that you are 100% done" which gives you an alternative story path as well as the best boss fights in the game.

What makes a game like Melee somewhat worthy of the title is that it is a fighting game, and Melee is such a rare case that it has been thriving for over 13 years. But even moreso than it still being relevant, at it's core it has practically unlimited replay-ability.
What sets melee, or any fighting game apart from different games, is that it's more of a tool for players than an interactive experience. A fighting game sets a framework for players to engage in combat against eachother and they must work within the rules of the game to win.
Melee is a fine example of a really good fighting game with solid mechanics and interesting physics exploits that have been used to further the game's competitive factors.
Melee is also unique in the fighting game genre because it's platform based, and works backwards where players need to rack up damage in a percentage level to blast opponents into killzones.
Melee is just a really good tool for people to interact and engage with the medium so much so that it's played professionally 14 years after release, with the company that published the game supporting it in only the last year.
Sure, Chrono Trigger is a great game in it's own right, but it's hard to compare such different takes on games as a medium to decide a single "greatest game of all time." As we can see, the game with the bigger fanbase wins. This really doesn't matter, and I just wanted to share my thoughts.
