XIII is good but the pacing drags a LOT. There's nothing to explore and zero interaction with the hallway and this was really aggravating for a lot of us. The combat is the highlight of the game.
XIII-2 fixes what was wrong with XIII in terms of exploration, now you can go where you prefer and some maps are pretty big. But it ruined the combat since almost all fights will end in a matter of secons. It comes with an insanely grindy pokemon minigame.
Lightning Returns continues the horrifying plot of the series, but this time the game is actually good. 13 days to complete 5 main quests in whatever order you prefer, with tons of customization and a great combat system.

On my rig it runs like shit, but only in certain parts. Academia, the Tower and its boss were the worst, I basically fought enemies at 10fps with nothing I could do about it.
But the final boss at the end of the game throws you hundreds of special effects and that never had a single frame drop. Makes no sense to me.

FF sequels generally sell 50% or less of the original, so that's actually pretty normal. The only exception is probably Crisis Core, which managed ridiculous numbers (3 million legit copies plus at least 6 million pirated, according to SE).

The combat itself plays exactly like Valkryie Profile if it were real time and has something like the dress sphere's in FF X-2 only it gives you different commands as opposed to different jobs.
