I liked it because the characters were interesting, the fourth wall breaking stuff in the flowey fight was fun, the music was great obviously, the gameplay was fun and varied and the jokes made me laugh. The whole true lab section made the game go from a 7/10 to an 8/10 for me personally I wasn't expected that sort of stuff.

Fallout 4 is my GOTY.
I just love being lost in the world and exploring to my hearts content. No one does exploration as well as Bethesda. No one does animations as poorly or has as many bugs either, but I can get over those.
MGSV was great at first, but the second chapter really brings the game down. The open world is also empty and static, and the repeated missions is a real slap in the face. Game feels unfinished as fuck. I was done with it once I was done the main story, unlike FO4 which I have already put more hours into.
Undertale is good in it's own right, but it has no right to stand up to these two titles. This is like comparing a greeting card jingle to a symphony; Sure the jingle is catchy, well done, and pretty much as good as jingles get, but it's still reaching far lower and attempting far less.
Graphical work for the entire game would be less work than a square meter in FO4 or a single enemy in MGSV. It did what it was trying to do perfectly, but what it was trying to do was much much less than the other two games.

I really don't get this logic.
The exploration doesn't mean shit when the graphics are ass and all you get is a few props scattered with maybe a group of enemies. Even Far Cry games manage to do exploration better.
Going on quests is another awful argument, because somehow the quests were even more repetitive and tedious then 3.

I've been trying to like it for few hours now but I can't help it.
It's shit.
I'm not even talking about the cringe worthy graphics, endless glitches and horrible animation.
The game has no soul, everything is pointless and the characters are forgettable and the fucking dog is driving me nuts.
This one episode has more impact than playing through all of undertale's endings. Sure as a whole the story was lacking but nothing can beat this one scene.

Undertale had two important things that AAA developers have consistently failed to do well in recent years: Good writing and great music.
Its success ought to be a testament to how important these things are to gamers. Mainstream developers seem to only care about graphics and, to a lesser extent, gameplay. And of course this is because they want to show the ways in which they're using new console hardware. This means that visual design, worldbuilding, dialogue, characters arcs, are not priorities and are becoming steadily diminished in the amount of focus they receive. Fallout 4 is a wonderful example of this.
With the advent of voice acting, music is also becoming steadily marginalized in games. The last AAA game with a really memorable soundtrack was probably Dark Souls. But even that is outclassed by indie games like Undertale and Bastion and fuck, even Katawa Shoujo. Most mainstream games just commodify music, they don't use it effectively to create atmosphere, dramatic tension, or to build character (the way character theme songs do).
For these reasons I think Undertale is one of the most important games this year. It eschews heavy graphics and gameplay to showcase that people still value the things that made classic JRPGs great - good dialogue delivered over a simple interface with a moving soundtrack playing in the background. If modern game developers could only find a way of putting this simple formula into newer games, we could come close to reliving the glory days.

So by "taking care of your settlements" you mean sinking a lot of time into making them into fortresses only to have them never get attacked at all... and then getting radiant quests from Preston where you have to go into a building and kill all the super mutants/ghouls/raiders?
Settlement building could have been fun if there were some reason to use it, but it's purely cosmetic. You build your settlement, people move there, turrets make that loud noise, people walk around and pick at crops and sometimes go to bed. That's all.
Maintaining settlements is nothing. Just put down enough beds and enough turrets and enough water spouts and food and they're fine. Anything you do above that carries absolutely no incentive.
