This game was ultra cute. If only the UI had been more polished.
The town and established NPCs had a lot more personality than AC's. I liked the monster and inanimate object villagers in addition to the animals a lot too.
You could date a zombie or cell phone or a cupcake in this game.

There totally is an Animal Crossing clone. It's on steam and it's alright. There is a mobile version that's F2P and full of microtransactions, but the PC version doesn't have any of that shit.

Because Animal Crossing is so unique and so niche that it has a monopoly on the genre. Everyone that would play an AC like game is already playing AC.
It's a similar reason as to why there are so few smash clones, and even fewer that are good.

The point of a prototype is to be a prototype. If you can get the prototype up, you will be able to find an artist easier.

Konami literally spent nothing on advertising it. It had a single add in nintendo power before it came out. Most people didn't know about it until it just suddenly appeared on store shelves.
Then when it failed no more got translated. It had two sequels in japan.
It's like saying why aren't there more Sims clones.
It's just hard to horn in on the "comfy life simulator" market. The games have established, passionate fanbases, and unless your game is superior in every single conceivable way, it's unlikely to turn a profit/
