People generally use one of the heavy skells for soloing, but if you run a party there's not much reason for not picking other skells unless you really plan on spamming those superweapons, as despite having smaller fuel tanks, they have better fuel economy, meaning they trade superweapon cost for evasion and speed.
The classes differ quite a bit. They offer different bonuses and furthermore after mastering a class, you can mix and match arts and at the end even swap around weapons between classes to make your own custom setup.

Multiplayer works like this:
>32 Player Squads, basically chat rooms, can broadcast messages, inform people where items are, and so on
>Squad Missions are things that pop up that everyone in the Squad can contribute towards, like killing enemies, or gathering items, you don't show up on screen with each other though
>Squad member Crosses can appear in your world as two hour rentable AI party members with all their gear and stats, and they can get some experience (and... possibly loot?) from their character being used
Completing squad missions can give you... points? Tickets? That you can redeem for monster part rewards and some other things. Furthermore, completing a set can open up ACTUAL, LIVE multiplayer missions in a similar vein to Monster Hunter in that four people set up a party and go hunt shit.
There's also squad-wide monsters that appear under certain circumstances. I've heard it's similar to the Ur-Dragon from Dragon's Dogma, in that its health is shared across each individual squad member's instance. I don't know if you can multiplayer it up to challenge it or not, though.
Furthermore, there's sort of a division-based competition, where members of the squad in each division have their division points tallied up periodically and are granted awards/rewards and bonuses based on their ranking.
I know there's different types of squads/multiplayer modes also, but I don't know the exact specifics.

The soundtracks are different because they fit the different themes presented in each game. The original Xenoblade was more fantasy-sci-fi so it has this fantasy RPG vibe to its soundtrack. X is more hard-sci-fi and its soundtrack reflects that.I still think Xenoblade's soundtrack is betterbut I think the change is for the better. Basically most review scores were weighted heavily on this. Most just shrugged and just took an hour to read the manual while others just raged over the game.
Personally I'm happy we have a game that doesn't really hold our hand and actually try to make their system complex and interesting. In a media that is dumbing down everything it's a breath of fresh air whenever a series tries to inject deepness in their system.
