Even with an IPS screen the 3D in the N3DS XL is still complete garbage. Sure, the headtracking lets you look at it from different angles without it turning into an unusable mess, but the cross-talk is still so bad that it's just plain ugly as a result and there's no upside to using it.

IPS Screens will have the first 8 or so blocks appear indistinguishable from the background on the top screen. TN Screens will have only the first 3 or so blocks indistinguishable from the background.
Another way to quickly tell with this website is just if the blacks looks different from Top Screen to Bottom Screen. If they're different, congrats, you didn't get ripped off. If they're the same, you got fucked with a TN Screen.

When I was observing the games, it looked like my characters when moving, generated small traces during their animation, as if the vsync was turned off.
Some games with transparency effects, the same was with small scanlines.

that's just an easy way to tell it but the colors are deeper on the IPS, most noticeably the blacks of course.
People with TN should normally not mind their screen anyways unless they've actually seen an IPS in person (demo units probably are).

Just want to point out to everyone panicking that having a yellow tint at extreme angle(s) does not automatically mean you have a TN screen.
As long as you view from an angle that doesn't have the yellow tint which shows your top screen much more crisp and dark than your bottom, then it's IPS. Do this with the basic black theme to really know for sure.

The difference is difficult to tell even at an angle, as BOTH of them washout somewhat, even the IPS. The difference is the TN not only washes out but changes hues.

no, I'm just an expert on this matter since I've had over 30 N3DSXLs and I can tell you for a fact that 85% of them are IPS. IPS still has washout, it's just not nearly as bad as TN and TN also changes hues which makes side viewing particularly bad. most obvious is the "internet" blue turns from blue to teal.
IPS panels are only available in the XL so if you have a standard size it's always TN
