And then when the game is finished, the party who contracted the game now owns it. Platinum does not recoup development money through royalties of game sales, they already have all the money before the game even goes on sale. It might be a failure by Nintendo's standards, but the game could sell 10 million units and Platinum wouldn't see a penny.

So which era of TMNT will Platinum's game be based off of? With the next movie coming out next year it'd probably be tempting to do it as a tie-in, but I kind of doubt it. They could do the 2012 cartoon, but it's not violent enough for an M-rated game. Realistically that would leave us with the 1980s cartoon, the 1990 movie, and the original 1980s comics. The 1980s cartoon seems a bit unlikely because it's so light and campy, and it really hasn't aged well. The original movie would possible, although I think more likely they would try to emulate the gritty style of the original comics. They could give the game a hand-drawn cell shaded look to re-create the style of the comic, with certain colors being more pronounced for gameplay purposes (especially red, since that was often times the only color used in the old illustrations of the turtles).

I actually was hesitant about the new TMNT movie, especially after seeing the reviews, but I left the theater loving it and I was surprised at how similar it was in many ways to the original film. I dare say it could almost be considered a remake as much as it is a reboot. They nailed the personalities of the turtles, which is pretty much the most fundamental aspect of any incarnation of TMNT.
The next movie has even more stuff from the original cartoon series and comics in it like Beebop and Rocksteady, and Baxter Stockman. Now that the origin story is out of the way they're pretty much going all-out and I'm very curious to see what comes of it.

Honestly, if they had just kept Eric Sachs as Shredder I honestly think it would've been better. For one thing the grudge between Shredder and Splinter, which is vital, would've been preserved more, and the whole thing just would've made more sense.
I think the movie has its moments, such as when it is focusing on a brotherly bond. But making the turtles lumbering hulks and some dumb shit like adrenaline helping make the turtles good as new when almost all of their blood was drained bugged me.
Mikey was also a fucking creeper. Johnny Knoxville as Leonardo was surprisingly better than I expected.

They either need to make their next game through Platinum be a budget title, or they need to give Platinum a real budget to work with. I would prefer the latter, because most of the games Platinum makes are cheap under-the-radar titles. The only big-budget game they currently have in the pipleline that I know of is Scalebound, and I still don't know shit about it. Disney made a grave mistake in judgment by giving EA exclusive access to Star Wars. No-one is denying that. However, from a corporate standpoint, it made sense originally-- EA owns the studio that made the game that inspired Battlefront (Dice), and the developer who made KOTOR (Bioware). From there eyes, there was no reason not to, but now that Battlefront is out it should be pretty clear to Disney that EA cannot be trusted with a monopoly over the franchise any more than Marvel can be trusted with their mobile bullshit.
Could I be wrong? Of course. Disney isn't really much better than EA, but Disney has a lot more skin in the game in this case than EA. If EA makes a bad game, in their minds it will still sell well enough that they can just make a sequel with recycled assets and keep churning out profit year after year. Disney has a brand to maintain though, and if they feel that is threatened by EA's handling of the Star Wars license they will issue an ultimatum. Disney gave EA a chance, and if they keep fucking things up then Disney is fully within their rights to tear up the deal. Everyone and their mother knows by now that Battlefront is a fiasco, and as they say, hindsight is 20/20.
