It didn't though. The Dreamcast was out in Japan 2.5 years before it was discontinued and when it was discontinued it didn't disappear from the shelves it still sold a couple million at $50. You can't just take its lifetime sales and pretend it sold that much before discontinuation. If it really sold 9 million 1.5 years they'd have no reason to discontinue it, those are relatively good sales.

There's actually nothing that will make the NX sell. Does it have some sort of gimmick? Whether the answer is yes or no, that's a bad thing. If yes then it's another gimmick console. It no then it's a redundant, unnecessary console which will just be like the PS4 and Xbox One.
What makes them think third party devs will be interested in developing for the Wii U? Nintendo will never abandon their "kiddy" image in the eyes of dudebros, and Sony and Microsoft will just do pricecuts on their consoles and / or release new consoles that do everything the NX does but more and better once the NX is out. Thus rendering the NX useless.
It won't have any games, nobody will want to develop for that awkward "between gens" console that's seen as being for kids, devs will instead hold out for the next Sony and Microsoft consoles, it either won't have any sort of interesting gimmick to get people to buy it, or it will just be another shitty unnecessary redundant console, and Nintendo is fucking all the Wii U owners in the ass by abandoning it so quickly. The Wii U should have lasted until at least 2017. Now they're charging us another $400 (or however much it will cost) for a shitty console with no games.

This is what people don't realize. Nintendo backed themselves into a corner and they NEED a gimmick to survive now. Remember that it's been 10 years since Nintendo stopped going after Sony/Microsoft directly, and focusing primary on casuals. There are entire generations of people who grew up never knowing a Nintendo that was anything but kiddy/side console to pair with something better. If they go after Sony/Microsoft now they die, it will take another decade of marketing for them to unfuck themselves out of this.

The Wii was a fucking anomaly. The NES and SNES basically ran uncontested in North America the N64 had a lot of resistance with the PS1 and the GC was successful but also eclipsed by the PS2. The Wii sold like hotcakes (my fucking parents and grandparents bought wii's for christs sake)

I think what we're seeing is that we've reached the consensus from all of the experimentation in that the PC style architecture is the most efficient for gaming. There's no need to take risks anymore because it's all been done and we have a solid result.
