Why were ancient civilizations always so shit at properly executing their villains? Some modern teenager and his friends always has to do it.

Because ancient civs were shitty places where no one knew the true power of friendship. So most ancient evils couldn't be beaten by them.

Still, they just did shitty jobs in general.

>showing how relatable he is, his struggle to get to the top, sacrificing so much and becoming disillusioned and cynical at the end, his motives justifying his actions

Starts out as an idealistic protagonist in Season 3, starts to compromise his values a bit in the finale in order to get ahead, completely betrays his own stated goals in order to score more political points at the end of Season 4, becomes a part of the system he was originally trying to change by Season 5

It would be stranger if the protagonists didn't retreat from an ancient evil they don't have the ability to fight.
And even then, there's plenty of RPGs where they attempt to kill the ancient evil at first and then get wrecked, albeit without dying

Sword of the Stars has bird dragons as a playable alien faction that travels through space in flocks; the bigger the flock the faster they warp
Endless Space has a bird samurai faction; endless legend has a bird minor faction
Alien Soldier has one as a main character
Starbound has Avians although the game is shit
Secrets of Raetikon and Chasing Aurora both have birdperson characters
Shining Force has avian people characters
You can mod Overgrowth to have a karate crow character
There's probably a bunch more I'm missing

To be fair, the difference between us and a petrel is that we can make the conscious decision not to murder other animals, and have the ability to get our nutrition entirely from plants and nutrition supplements.

Not that I'm a vegetarian myself, I'm too much of an asshole to stop eating meat, but the reason they get mad is that we have the ability to not murder on a massive scale and choose to continue doing so.

Even if the small benefit you get from food tasting good is even near equivalent to the fucking abysmal condition of the average factory farm, which it isn't, in my opinion; you can still cook up mean meals without any meat in them.

>Humans evolved to be omnivores. Ignoring any section of diet is dumb.
By that logic, since we evolved to be endurance runners, using vehicles instead of exercising is dumb.

Again, you'd be hard pressed to live a healthy life as a vegetarian a hundred years ago, but we've progressed far in nutritional science, and eating meat is largely unnecessary now.

>Even if the small benefit you get from food tasting good is even near equivalent to the fucking abysmal condition of the average factory farm, which it isn't, in my opinion; you can still cook up mean meals without any meat in them.
Sure you can. But I'm not a wood-elf, I'm a human. I need nutrition from meat.

That doesn't mean I have to get it from a farm where the chickens are shoved in a cage and fed until their legs break and then get their throats cut by a buzzsaw. But it does mean I need to kill a chicken.

>By that logic, since we evolved to be endurance runners, using vehicles instead of exercising is dumb.
Who uses vehicles for exercising? Vehicles are for transport and are much faster than using legs.

I understand that. But non-meat diets also require extraordinary amounts of eating to make up for the lost caloric intake. That and the fact that (as I said before), it's important to have a balanced diet of all nutrient sources. Eating only green stuff and then trying to make up for the meat with protein only goes so far. It's unhealthy.

>We don't live in the 1800s, we live in 2015. You don't need to kill anything to eat healthily.
That's false any way you slice it, unless we're consuming lab-made pills that didn't come from the death of a living entity (even plants).

Also, healthy can mean many different things to many different people. There is no "health standard".

Again, if this was 1642 AD, you'd have a point.
It doesn't only go so far, it's not unhealthy, you can get everything your body requires nutritionally from non-meat sources, it requires extra work, sure, but not much.

>even plants
Of course I was ignoring plants in terms of killing something; you can argue all day about plants being sentient and having emotions in some seventies version of some gaia hypothesis, but you'd have to move the discussion to /x/.

What's important is that we minimize pain, not death. If factory chickens were modified to be braindead and emotionless, there'd be little moral issue with killing them, besides the initial modifications.

Depends on the bird. For example budgies need much less attention than dogs, but more than lizards, if that makes any sense.

Cockatoos need constant attention or they get upset. An upset cockatoo is scary.

If you keep them by themselves, yes, but if you get them a little friend they'll keep each other entertained. That makes it marginally harder to bond with one, but only very very slightly so, they'll both come to regard you as part of their flock if you give them some attention every now and then. So there's no real reason not to keep a pair of parakeets, cockatiels, etc.

Gonna have to disagree with you there
Birds are amazing pets for bird people,
Birds are not a domesticated species, this means that they do what pleases them, not what pleases you. They will scream because it’s fun, they will repeat behaviours to get a reaction out of you, they will make a huge mess because it’s enjoyable.
They are prone to a lot of behavioural problems, some may pluck their own feathers because of stress, they may scream out of boredom or for attention, they will easily bite people due to inadvertent reinforcement, they will not hesitate to bite if you overstep their boundaries
Everything you do with them is based off of trust and respect, you must move at their pace every step of the way, understand how to read their body language and understand that when you get bitten it is your fault, not the bird’s
They will chew everything they can get their beaks on, small beaks hurt a lot, they can break the wood off a door, rip holes in your favourite shirt, damage expensive furniture
Your entire life needs to be changed to work around them, all teflon products must be removed as it can cause asphyxiation, air fresheners, aerosols, candles, self cleaning ovens, microwave popcorn all has to go as they can all kill birds
They are extremely sensitive to toxic metals, woods, plants, and foods
They are highly glorified on the internet, no matter how cute they are all those sorts of things you see take a lot of time, trust and bond building to establish
Aggressive problems are very probable, birds can be very prone to developing ‘one-person’ favourability where they like one person in the house but refuse contact with others. The only way to negate this is to have all family members on board to actively work with the bird and socialize them.
Not discouraging anyone to get a bird, just that it requires a ton of research.

Jumping into this conversation just to say my 2 cents on birds as pets: I agree with you.

They make great pets but the fact is is that most bird owners never put the work that is required in, like you say. As a result, most birds end up awful, irritable, and pissed off. They're flat out TERRIBLE because of the people that think "OH MAN IM GONNA HAVE MYSELF A CUTE BIRD ON MY SHOULDER ALL THE TIME OR GET MYSELF A TALKING ONE YEAH!".

Birds are not great pets in the strictest sense because most people cannot be assed to actually work with their bird. I grew up HATING birds because every bird I met WAS A FUCKING DICK.

Again, I'm not saying that vegetarianism has been viable at all for human history, just that it's becoming more and more viable every day, and is viable with little drawbacks besides food preferences and cost in the modern day; at least in first world countries. Common sense dictates that having any pet that isn't a rock takes a lot of time, money, and work either way. But a lot of idiots still get them because they're cute, and then neglect or get rid of them when they find this out.

An example of this that baffles me is that my country has a growing population of wild parakeets that literally started out as discarded pets, which formed little groups and managed to survive.

You're not having ANY impact, and you ARE participating in it. Do you seriously think that just because you don't eat meat, that you're exempt from the industry as a whole? Unless you're growing all of your food (which is the ONLY acceptable path if you're a vegetarian for moral issues), then you're a part of the problem. Do you realize how many animals have had to die to make room for us to grow food?

I went back a little and checked to see if you mentioned that you do grow food, and I didn't see anything, but if I've made a mistake, I apologize. As someone who volunteered for an animal rescue center, I get supremely bent out of shape when people think they're making a difference with their choice of food. The hole goes far too deep for that.

Hell, I'll even eat factory/free range meat and products if it's already bought. I just refuse to fund something like factory farming, even if my minuscule amount of refused funding really means nothing on a massive scale.

Cruel =/= immoral. I also think the way that Petrel killed the penguin was cruel, but I don't think that's immoral.

The thing is, there's several differences between a stray cat and a factory bird. The cat will feed nobody but microbes and maybe a hobo. The factory bird will probably go to a family with no monetary means of getting protein besides cheap meat. They would go hungry without it. That is more wrong than slaughtering subhuman animals.

BUT
WHY?
>>
>>318343565
Funfact: during harvest of vegetable fields or corn fields, thousands of small rodents, insects, and sometimes even deer die.

Are those not worth as much as other animals to you? Why are insects and rodents allowed to die for your food, but not cows and chickens? Are they somehow less worthy of life than the others?

Unless you grow your own food and make sure no animals are being hurt in the process you're a dipshit if you think being a vegetarian or even vegan makes you kill less animals.

Call of Cthulhu. Cthulhu made artists around the world go crazy because he woke up just enough to roll over and hit the snooze button.
