Splinter Cell is a stealth game. MGS is a stealth espionage action game. Notice the action. Splinter Cell doesn't have boss fights and forced action sequences, at least in the good old days. Anyway, I was pretty pissed off at first too but the more I think about it, the more I realize that most of the anger is because it was added at this stage of the game rather than the fact that it exists. We've known this was going to be the business model since it was announced. Same as KF1. From what people have said it'll have 6 tiers of cosmetics rarity with 5 of those tiers being free and the last being obtained through RNG in something like crates. So it's a setup similar to TF2 if instead of weapons they were all hats.
I'll have to see how it works, but I guess the game was only $30 so I can't complain too much.

Blacklist gets way more shit that it should.
It's not the best Splinter Cell, and there are some forced "action" events, but you generally get through it completely stealthy.
What this video doesn't show is that this is the climax to a long ass mission that you can completely stealth through.
Conviction was shit though, you couldn't even hide bodies if I remember correctly and the stealth was super simplified, with more emphasis on you using the game's "auto-kill" feature to kill loads of baddies at once.
