the demo is shitty man, the main draw of the game is team building, and the demo had a fixed party, no boss battles and no items so it basically came down to press soultimate to win.

Some people still don't quite understand how combat works, and may be on the fence in considering a purchase. This is for those people.

You start combat by targeting a monster, and then your stats and the Arts Palette pop up. The Arts Palette consists of nine selectable buttons. In the beginning, most will be empty, but you will always have the Combat Mode button in the middle before you enter battle. The other slots are dedicated to Arts. More on Arts later.
Once you enter Combat Mode, you will begin auto attacking. You have the option of starting with an Art, but starting with auto attacks from Combat Mode can be advantageous in itself. You can auto attack with melee or ranged, and both have distinct bonuses, furthermore you can switch between them at any time during combat. One of the benefits of auto-attacking is the generation of TP - Tension Points. Tension Points can be used for later, more powerful Arts, to revive a fallen comrade, or to enter Overdrive. I'll get to the second benefit of auto attacks in a moment but for now, let's move on to Arts.
Arts are, well, basically MMO skills. You use them, they do something, then they cool down before you can reuse them. There are four classes of Arts: Offensive Melee, Offensive Ranged, Buffs, Debuffs. Pretty simple stuff, but the arts themselves are not always so simple. Just taking from Offensive Arts, there are a myriad of effects, including synergistic ones. You can potentially topple a monster over, leaving it more vulnerable to damage. You might have one that slows the monster's attacks if you stab from the side. You can potentially certain statuses if attacking with one art after usage of a specific other art. You might force all enemies in your immediate area to topple if you land the striking blow. All sorts of effects are available. What deviates from standard MMOs however is, in XCX at least, the presence of Double Cooldowns.

Double Cooldowns are the second benefit of auto attacks -- depending on melee or ranged, some arts or others will cool down a second time, boosting their effects. Between Double Cooldowns and Tension Points, it is worthwhile to know when to hold off on using Arts to instead auto attack. Balance of the two is key to success in battle.
Now, we move on to Soul Voice and Soul Challenge. Soul Voice is when a party member calls out for usage of specific classes of Arts, and they will glow on your Arts Palette. This is, in effect, a form of optional quick time event. Using the Art type they have requested will cause both you and your party member to act in tandem with your individual Arts, thereby boosting the effects of both or providing new effects altogether. Furthermore, performing Soul Voice will heal both you and your partner party member.
Soul Voice coming from you is customizeable. In a variety of situations, you can request for Party Members to use certain art types. Again, this will become a quick time event: Soul Challenge, a more obvious quick time event wherein an orange circle will close in on grey and blue circles, and you must press B at the right time to reap the effects. Soul Voice coming from you will heal your entire party.
Both Soul Voice and Soul Challenge heal you and your party members. This is very important, because... there are no real dedicated healing Arts in Xenoblade Chronicles X, and no item usage mid-battle! Most healing effects are secondary to some kind of buff or attack, and typically provide regen over time, rather than a straight health top up. Playing defensively on Planet Mira... is just dialing back on the offense a little. Consistent offense is how this game rolls!

Next up, Overdrive. You don't have this ability right away, but you can use your Tension Points (and therefore additionally your ability to revive team mates) to enter Overdrive. In this state, all arts will start secondary cooldowns automatically, regardless of what type of auto attack you are performing. All cooldowns, first or second, are also quickened. Furthermore, during Overdrive, you gain access to a third cooldown for additional boosts.
But that's not all. Overdrive will allow you to use combos. The more hits you get off in succession with the same kinds of arts (ranged after ranged, melee after melee), the higher your combo rises. The higher your combo rises, the more your stats will increase. Attacking will deal extra damage, Arts will cool down even faster, monsters with resistances will resist less. And there's more where that came from!: The Art type you last used will change the colour of the combo for different effects, whether that be increased damage to breakable parts, or a Tension Points bonus, or increased experience gain in your Inner Levels or Class levels. Overdrive is no joke!
Now, on to monsters. They're fairly simple. The red icons in their stats tell you if they can be the ones to initiate combat first, and how you might be able to avoid that. During combat, if they have one, attacking from their blind spot can deal extra damage, whether this be above them, behind them, and so on. I believe you might also get extra TP gain but don't quote me on that. Some monsters will have parts that you can target specifically, and break. This can get you extra rewards if you break them, and sometimes it can even disable troublesome attacks. Monsters come in three tiers: Mooks, Tyrants, and Nemesis. Tyrants are basically mega mooks or Uniques. Nemesis are special, unique enemies above even Tyrants. They are no laughing matter, and can easily annihilate your entire party if you aren't prepared.

Lastly, there are your Classes. You start off as a lowly Drifter, but can progress in to one of three, and then one of six classes. You can switch your class at any time, so don't worry too much about experimenting. Each class has a different focus, and some may be simpler or harder than others. Each class has a different weapon focus. While mastering classes and earning arts will allow you to mix and match arts between classes, it is not until you have truly mastered an entire branch up until its end class that you may use its weapons with any other class. Later in the game, you may even find yourself multiclassing...
Each class, aside from its arts, also has an inherent bonus towards certain actions, in addition to something called "skill slots", of which how many you can have will vary by class. Skill slots are basically passive bonuses you can equip. For anyone familiar with the original Xenoblade, I am led to believe that these are essentially a different form of the skills system. They may provide you with additional damage during night, additional exp gain during the day, additional HP gain from soul voice... at least, they did in the original Xenoblade. I expect their effects to be quite varied.
I should probably talk about equipment, division bonuses, or FrontierNav bonuses, but honestly I've written a shit tonne today, most of which was meant for other threads that died on me, and I actually don't know all the details about those things yet, so I'll leave those explanations for the actual game.
